Optimal Design of Water Distribution Networks

Journal of the Hydraulics Division, 1978
A method for the optimal design of water distribution networks is presented. It defines the least-cost solution for a closed network, using standard diameters on the market. It can take into account the branches whose diameter value are assigned (existing); the range of velocities in the pipes and of the hydraulic heads can be imposed. And, lastly, the

Distributed Reference Management Strategies for Networked Water Distribution Systems

IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 2011
Abstract A distributed constrained supervisory strategy for large-scale spatially distributed systems is presented and applied to a networked water distribution system. The aim is at reconfiguring, whenever necessary in response to different supply downstream demands, the nominal set-points to the tank water levels so that all prescribed coordination ...

Decomposition of Water Distribution Networks

A I I E Transactions, 1976
Abstract This paper generalizes the class of design problems for water supply systems which can be solved by mathematical programming. The goal is to design a least cost water supply system to satisfy minimal pressure head requirements at specified rates of usage for multiple customers.

Water Distribution Networks

2014
A water distribution system is a complex assembly of hydraulic control elements connected together to convey quantities of water from sources to consumers. The typical high number of constraints and decision variables, the nonlinearity, and the non-smoothness of the head—flow—water quality governing equations are inherent to water supply systems ...

Hydraulically Predictable Water Distribution Networks

Civil-Comp Proceedings, 2009
There is a considerable amount of uncertainty associated with the design and operation of water distribution systems. These include: long-term projections of the growth in demand; the spatial distribution of the nodal demands coupled with diurnal and seasonal consumption patterns; variations in electricity/energy tariffs; bursts and component failures;

Optimization of water distribution networks

Journal of Hydraulic Research, 1996
In this study, a computer program is developed which enables us to design a water distribution system which satisfies all constraints including pipe diameters, low velocities, and nodal pressures with a minimum total cost. The hydraulic analysis of the water distribution system is performed by the Newton-Raphson method.

NETWORK ANALYSIS FOR RESILIENCE EVALUATION IN WATER DISTRIBUTION NETWORKS

Environmental Engineering and Management Journal, 2015
Resilience is meant in this paper as the capability of a networked infrastructure to provide its service even if some components are failed: it depends both on net-wide measures of connectivity and the role of a single component. This paper has two objectives: first to show how a set of global measures can be obtained using techniques from network ...

New Approach to Water Distribution Network Calibration

Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, 1999
A new approach is proposed for calibrating hydraulic network models. This procedure uses a nonlinear optimization algorithm along with a standard, off-the-shelf, network solver. Pipe roughness is adjusted until simulation results agree with the values observed in the field.

Calibrating Water Distribution Network Models

Journal of Environmental Engineering, 1988
Calibration of water distribution network models is necessary in predicting their behavior under different loading conditions or in planning their expansions. Of the several data used in calibration, the predicted nodal demands and the pipe resistance coefficients are the least reliable.

Sampling design for water distribution network

2003
Modeling activities, specifically model calibration, need sensor measurements. Since data collection is expensive and time-consuming, ineffective measurements should be avoided. For this reason, it is important to have a method for designing the field data collection that will give the most useful information.
