Bat Tongues and Foraging: Linking Morphology to Hunting Strategies

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
We linked the bat tongue's mediodorsal lobe (MDL), a muscular prominence, to foraging strategies. Aerial hawkers exhibit tall MDLs and prominent forward‐pointing papillae. The MDL may function as a barrier or filter, preventing unintentional ingestion of non‐food material, aiding in prey handling, and controlling food access during fast flight ...

Volumetric Comparison of Overall Brain and Neuropil Size Between Social and Non‐social Spiders: Exploring the Social Brain Hypothesis

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Brain size may be influenced by the cognitive demands of sociality (social brain hypothesis). We used microCT to compare CNS and brain volumes in social versus solitary huntsman and crab spiders. Social huntsman spiders had larger arcuate and mushroom bodies, while social crab spiders had larger visual neuropils.

Fire Extinction Analysis and OH-PLIF Visualization of the Methane–Air Premixed Laminar Flame Interacting with the Downward Water Mist

open access: yesFire
In this study, a McKenna burner made for calibration is used to generate the laminar flame with the equivalence ratio of 0.78~2.0. The effect of the downward water mist spray on the extinction of the methane–air premixed laminar flame is investigated ...

Decarbonising Respiratory Care: The Impact of a Low‐Carbon Salbutamol Pressurised Metered‐Dose Inhalers

open access: yesAllergy, EarlyView.
Healthcare systems contribute up to 5% of global GHG emissions, with inhalers contributing a proportion of these. The carbon footprint of current salbutamol inhalers (pMDI with HFA‐134a propellant and DPI) and a planned salbutamol pMDI with low‐GWP propellant HFA‐152a was quantified across seven countries.
