A carbon‐free, as‐sintered MgO–steel cermet anode, fabricated via cold isostatic pressing using MgO–C refractory recyclate, was evaluated under laboratory‐scale K‐cryolite electrolysis at 800°C. Operation at this reduced temperature, combined with the electrolyte's limited electrical conductivity, led to an increase in cell voltage.

An assessment of environmental impacts of cassava starch extraction technologies [PDF]
The environmental impacts of the transformation of cassava roots into starch were assessed for three contrasting technologies at small and large scale (1-2 and 100-200t starch per day), using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. The objective was

Water Recycling – Industrial Applications
The application of industrial water recycling techniques is demonstrated by examples of various industrial branches such as: steel production, pickling and plating, coal mining and coking, sulphite cellulose and paper production, sugar works, and power plants. Special consideration is given to water recycling in metal finishing works and paper mills.

Interaction of Ladle Slag With Varying SiO2 Content and Recyclate‐Based MgO–C Refractories
Ladle slags (CaO/Al2O3 = 1) with 1–20 wt% SiO2 were investigated in contact with industrial MgO–C refractories fabricated from fresh magnesia and 50 wt% recyclate. The sessile drop method at 1600°C reveals intensive gas formation, delayed slag infiltration in recyclate‐based samples, and, under high‐SiO2 slag, formation of a dense MgAl2O4‐rich ...

Collagen hydrolysate is evaluated as a sustainable binder for MgO‐C refractories. Its thermally induced cross‐linking and gas release lead to expansion and cracking in large bricks, but tailored batches with lignin, recyclates, or fine graphite improve the gas release while thermal treatment and stability.

Isotopic values of the Amazon headwaters in Peru: comparison of the wet upper Río Madre de Dios watershed with the dry Urubamba-Apurimac river system [PDF]
RATIONALE: The Amazon River is a huge network of long tributaries, and little is known about the headwaters. Here we present a study of one wet tropical Amazon forest side, and one dry and cold Atiplano plateau, originating from the same cordillera.

Water Recycling – Research Needs
The very wide spectrum of potential applications for re-used water is reflected in a need for research in many diverse areas. The most critical area is re-use for potable supplies, and here the identification of potential health effects is paramount. Other areas of application and their research needs are also considered.
