The preparation and characterization of alumina membranes with ultra-fine pores : Part 4. Ultrafiltration and hyperfiltration experiments [PDF]

open access: yes, 1985
The rejection characteristics of three types of alumina membranes for polyethylene glycol (PEG) polymers and dextrans soluted in water have been investigated. If the temperature at which the membranes are treated is increased, the pore size increases and

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Influence of Recycling on Chemical Properties and Hornification of CMP and [PDF]

open access: yesIranian Journal of Wood and Paper Industries, 2012
Cellulose fibers undergo a series of irreversible changes i.e hornification when exposed to cycles of wetting and drying. In this study, the effect of recycling on physical and chemical properties of chemimechanical pulp (CMP) and neutral sulfite semi ...

A novel approach to determining the contribution of the fiber and fines fraction to the water retention value (WRV) of chemical and mechanical pulps [PDF]

open access: yesCellulose, 2017
The swelling behavior of pulp fibers has a significant influence on process and product properties. The water uptake of fibers is controlled by a different mechanism. While fiber charge is a driving factor for swelling, the swelling is hindered by the solid structure of the fiber wall.

Wet scavenging of soluble gases in DC3 deep convective storms using WRF-Chem simulations and aircraft observations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
We examine wet scavenging of soluble trace gases in storms observed during the Deep Convective Clouds and Chemistry (DC3) field campaign. We conduct high-resolution simulations with the Weather Research and Forecasting model with Chemistry (WRF-Chem) of ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Filter paper method to determine the water retention curves for mortar and cement samples

open access: yesRevista IBRACON de Estruturas e Materiais
This study deals with the application of the filter paper method to determine water retention curves for mortar and concrete samples. A water retention curve exhibits the relationship between water content and energy state in interstitial water, normally

Simulasi Kolam Retensi untuk Mengatasi Banjir Genangan di Kota Bangkinang Bagian Barat [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Most of the surface run off water in rainy season in Bangkinang flow to Petai I river, and this condition makes the Petai I river unable to deliver it anymore to Kampar river, it will flood some region in Bangkinang.
