The water problem in Malta reflects to a significant extent water problems in the rest of the Mediterranean region. Rising water demands have resulted in increasing levels of production. Groundwater resources have been exploited beyond their sustainable yield resulting in water shortages, and salinity levels in groundwater, and ultimately tapwater ...

When the balance between availability and demand of water is disturbed, problems of water scarcity begin. In this chapter an attempt is made to explain the methods of measuring water scarcity based on secondary and primary data for which Thornthwaite’s water balance method and Sullivan’s water scarcity index method have been taken, respectively.

This chapter presents the concept of the establishment of a futures market in water in the context of the risk of water availability that Indian agriculture has been facing in the recent years. In the process, the chapter argues how the development of such a market can actually reduce the scarcity value of water, and may help in reducing the intensity ...

Water scarcity is an escalating global crisis that affects nearly one-fourth of the population, with predictions indicating that by 2030, demand will surpass supply by 40%. This looming crisis is predominantly impacting densely populated coastal cities and is exacerbated by the limited 0.5% of Earth's freshwater that is usable, strained further by ...
