Measurement of the variance of water surface slopes by a radar: Verification of algorithms

A full-scale experiment is carried out to study backscattering of a microwave radar signal by a rough water surface during flight over the Gorky water storage. A centimeter-wavelength Doppler radar with a knife-beam antenna oriented vertically downward was installed on the helicopter.

Satellite-Based Water Surface Slope in Small Mountain River

Satellite altimetry has emerged as a key alternative for inland water level measurement in addition to ground observations. Water surface slope (WSS) is one of the basic parameters of river morphology for discharge calculation. Estimation of WSS can also avoid systematic bias in satellite water levels relative to gauged data.

Collocated and simultaneous measurement of surface slope and amplitude of water waves

We demonstrate by experiment that, in addition to the local surface slope, local surface elevation can also be directly measured using the refracted light beam traversing an air-water interface, thus showing the feasibility of a new surface slope and wave height amplitude gauge for use in studying water waves.

A method of determining water surface slopes in ocean dynamics problems

A method is suggested that can be used to directly calculate derivatives of the sea level surface in models of hydrothermodynamics of a deep basin. The method does not involve the conventional approximation of these derivatives and provides high calculation accuracy for barotropic components of velocity.

Superficial treatment of slope surface to reduce rain water infiltration

Rainwater infiltration is the major cause of failure in unsaturated slopes. Analyses carried out to model groundwater flow in a partially saturated pyroclastic slope (Pirone, 2009) highlight the influence on the failure mechanism of the hydraulic condition at the upper boundary.
