Watershed empires, founded by states in the highlands on the upper reaches of river systems, conquered the flood plains and other regions around them. Three of these, Ch'in in ancient China, Assyria in the middle east, and the Inca of Peru, are described, with emphasis on the horrific socio-political systems which they developed.

WHEN I WAS first asked to write this commentary for Frontiers of Health Services Management, knowing that I would be contributing with the likes of Emily Friedman, I must admit I was a bit intimidated. But after reflection, I realized that I was able to offer comments on a subject I know all too well-the uninsured and the lack of a comprehensive ...

Algorithms for the Topological Watershed
2005The watershed transformation is an efficient tool for segmenting grayscale images. An original approach to the watershed [1,4] consists in modifying the original image by lowering some points until stability while preserving some topological properties, namely, the connectivity of each lower cross-section.

ON “BIOREGIONALISM”AND “WATERSHED CONSCIOUSNESS”∗
The Professional Geographer, 1985A diffused but philosophically sophisticated social movement, emphasizing the importance of the sense of place and a locally responsible stewardship of Nature, has been emerging in recent years in various parts of North America. Whether “bioregionalism”is a new way of thinking about our place on Earth and our relationship to it, as some would believe ...

We study the watersheds in edge-weighted graphs. Contrarily to previous works, we define the watersheds following the intuitive idea of drops of water flowing on a topographic surface. We establish the consistency (with respect to characterizations of the catchment basins and dividing lines) of these watersheds, prove their optimality (in terms of ...

Abstract 1959 was a watershed for the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Not only was it the year of Brubeck’s most famous creative project, Time Out, but it also marked the midpoint of the “classic” Quartet with Paul Desmond, which was formed in 1951 and disbanded in 1967.

AbstractBorders stability is desirable, but if borders had to be redrawn, what principle should be used to do so? Existing principles conflict: Uti possidetis favors the status quo, while the principle of self-determination is revisionist and favors unified peoples, and political cosmopolitanism seeks to undo borders altogether.
