A laboratory study of breaking waves

open access: yesOceanologia, 2004
This paper deals with some aspects of the wave-breaking phenomenon. The objectives were to study wave-breaking criteria, and the probability of whitecap coverage under fully controlled wave conditions.

Observations of Wave‐Breaking Direction and Energy Spread

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Surface waves are important for remote sensing, air–sea exchange, and underwater acoustics. The short gravity wave spectrum is azimuthally broad and bimodal.

Breaking planetary waves in the stratosphere

open access: yesNature, 1983
Satellite-borne IR radiometers are turning the Earth's stratosphere into one of the best available outdoor laboratories for observing the large-scale dynamics of a rotating, heterogeneous fluid under gravity. New insight is being gained not only into stratospheric dynamics as such, with its implications for pollutant behaviour and the ozone layer, but ...

Plasmonic Enhancement of Fluorescence and Protein Dynamics in Living Mammalian Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates plasmonic enhancement of the function of fluorescent voltage sensing proteins (genetically encoded voltage indicators, (GEVIs), QuasAr6) in live mammalian cells. Coupling to plasmonic nanoparticles does not just increase fluorescence, but influences the protein photocycle, creating a hybrid sensor with its response speed to ...

Evaluating RANS and LES turbulence models in hybrid wave modelling of breaking waves

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
Understanding the characteristics of breaking waves in deep and intermediate waters is crucial for air-sea interactions. Recent advancements in modelling these interactions have often relied on numerical wave tanks using Stokes waves, which may not fully

Spiro‐Phenothiazine Hole‐Transporting Materials: Unlocking Stability and Scalability in Perovskite Solar Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Fluorene‐functionalized spiro‐phenothiazine (PTZ‐Fl) exhibits strong Li+ affinity and thermal stability, enabling a PCE of 25.75% in small‐area cells and 22.07% in 25 cm2 modules. Under ISOS‐L3 conditions, PTZ‐Flbased devices retain over 80% efficiency after 1000 hours, demonstrating superior stability and scalability compared to spiro‐OMeTAD for next ...

Surf zone currents and influence on surfability

open access: yes, 2003
Surfing headlands are shallow and exposed coastal features that provide a specific form of breaking wave allowing a board-rider to ride on the unbroken wave face.
