Chaos-induced intensification of wave scattering

Physical Review E, 2005
Sound-wave propagation in a strongly idealized model of the deep-water acoustic waveguide with a periodic range dependence is considered. It is investigated how the phenomenon of ray and wave chaos affects the sound scattering at a strong mesoscale inhomogeneity of the refractive index caused by the synoptic eddy.

Controlling chaos in spin-wave instabilities

Physical Review Letters, 1991
A microwave-pumped spin-wave-instability experiment is used to demonstrate that chaos can be controlled by a small periodic perturbation of an available system parameter, as recently proposed by Ott, Grebogi, and Yorke. The experiment is performed in an yttrium-iron-garnet sphere in the subsidiary-resonance configuration with a small modulation in the ...

Bifurcations, chaos and control of chaos in spin-wave instabilities

Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, 1992
Abstract An experimental study of microwave pumped spin-wave instabilities in YIG reveals new types of bifurcations and the possibility of controlling chaos with a small perturbation in a system parameter.

A possible plasma wave chaos

Physics of Fluids B: Plasma Physics, 1990
A model equation for the ionization wave (Duffing’s equation) is studied. The system shows chaotic behavior via an intermittent route to chaos. It is left for experimentalists to devise experiments to test the theoretical predictions.

Wave chaos in singular quantum billiard

Physical Review Letters, 1990
Summary: We present a solvable singular quantum billiard which displays fully developed wave chaos. Its level statistics is investigated and proved to coincide with predictions of the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble of random matrices. The corresponding wave functions are shown to be well approximated by a Gaussian ransom variable.

Wave chaos in acoustics and elasticity

Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and Theoretical, 2007
Interpreting wave phenomena in terms of an underlying ray dynamics adds a new dimension to the analysis of linear wave equations. Forming explicit connections between spectra and wavefunctions on the one hand and the properties of a related ray dynamics on the other hand is a comparatively new research area, especially in elasticity and acoustics.

Spatiotemporal Chaos in Interfacial Waves

1991
Spatiotemporal chaos occurs in many hydrodynamic systems. This state is distinguished from temporal chaos by at least partial loss of coherence between different spatial regions, and from fully developed turbulence by the absence of a cascade. Several experimental and theoretical examples of spatiotemporal chaos are briefly reviewed.

Wave Chaos in Elastodynamics

2001
Recent years have demonstrated that ultrasonic waves in solids permit investigations of wave chaos, reverberation and multiple scattering that complement those of microwaves, optics and electronics. The large quality factors that can be achieved with elastic waves, their relatively slow wave speed, and their good impedance mismatch with the laboratory,

Intrinsic chaos in a plasma wave

Physics of Fluids B: Plasma Physics, 1990
The linear plasma response to an electrostatic wave is described by the Van Kampen–Case–Siewert (VCS) modal structure using Lie transform techniques. The VCS structure, which is well known to give rise to Landau damping, is also proved to be responsible for chaotic particle response and diffusion in phase space in the quasilinear limit.

Controlling spin-wave chaos

Journal of Applied Physics, 1994
Microwave pumped spin-wave instabilities in YIG spheres were one of the first experimental systems used to demonstrate that chaos can be suppressed by small periodic modulations in an accessible system parameter. Here we show that the equations describing two interacting spin-wave modes account satisfactorily for the experimental results, as long as ...
