Traveling waves and chaos in thermosolutal convection

Numerical experiments on two-dimensional thermosolutal convection reveal oscillations in the form of traveling, standing, modulated, and chaotic waves. Transitions between these wave forms and steady convection are investigated and compared with theory.

Genuine electromagnetic wave chaos

The existence of genuine electromagnetic wave chaos is predicted. The prediction is based on a general nonlinear mechanism that destroys the superposition principle in case the electromagnetic field is allowed to interact dynamically with its boundary. Strong support for this prediction is derived from various model calculations.

Chaos-induced intensification of wave scattering

Sound-wave propagation in a strongly idealized model of the deep-water acoustic waveguide with a periodic range dependence is considered. It is investigated how the phenomenon of ray and wave chaos affects the sound scattering at a strong mesoscale inhomogeneity of the refractive index caused by the synoptic eddy.

Wave chaos in singular quantum billiard

Summary: We present a solvable singular quantum billiard which displays fully developed wave chaos. Its level statistics is investigated and proved to coincide with predictions of the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble of random matrices. The corresponding wave functions are shown to be well approximated by a Gaussian ransom variable.
