Invisible Polymer Walls Enhance Reorientational Optical Nonlinearity in Oligothiophene‐Doped Liquid Crystals

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The polymer wall stabilized dye‐doped liquid crystals (PWLCs) enhance the sensitivity of photoinduced molecular reorientation in dye‐doped LC systems. The PWLC with an invisible polymer wall successfully reduces the threshold intensity and functions as an optical limiter under the incidence of low intensity light laser source.

Permanent magnet air-cored tubular linear generator for marine energy converters. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
In this paper the authors outline the performance and modelling of a prototype linear tubular permanent magnet machine with an air cored stator. The main application of the machine is in direct drive marine energy conversion systems, where speeds are ...

Chiral Phase Change Nanomaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work demonstrates reversible, non‐volatile phase transitions in chiral Ge2${\rm Ge}_2$Sb2${\rm Sb}_2$Te5${\rm Te}_5$ (GST) nanohelices for high‐speed optical modulation of chirality and dynamic control of the state of polarization (SOP). The chiral nanostructures are fabricated using a highly directional, wafer‐scale physical vapor deposition ...

Levelised Cost of Electricity for wave energy converters and the perception of milder resource non-viability in the North Sea

open access: yes, 2021
Wave energy is one of the most dense, predictable, and persistent energy sources, that has gone under-utilised, with many countries exposed to it. Depending on orientation with regards of coastal fronts to swells, resources can be characterised as high ...

Real-time ocean wave prediction in time domain with autoregression and echo state networks

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
This study evaluates the potential of applying echo state networks (ESN) and autoregression (AR) for dynamic time series prediction of free surface elevation for use in wave energy converters (WECs).

Magnetic‐Field Control of Surface States in CoFe2O4 Thin Films for Nitrate Electroreduction to Ammonia

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Magnetic‐field‐assisted CVD of heterometallic single‐source precursors modulates thin‐film surface electronic structure and interfacial charge transfer. Field‐grown (Cobalt ferrite‐1T)CF‐1T films exhibit stabilized electronic states, lower kinetic barriers, and markedly enhanced nitrate‐to‐ammonia electrocatalysis versus (Cobalt ferrite‐0T) CF‐0T ...

Dynamic Interfacial Chemistry of Choline Chloride as Electrolyte Additive for Stable Zn‐Iodine Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Choline chloride (ChCl) additive enables dynamic interface engineering in Zn‐I2 batteries by forming hydrophobic polyiodide complexes and a Zn‐stabilizing Ch+‐rich layer under electric field modulation. This dual‐function strategy suppresses iodine hydrolysis and dendrite formation, while optimizing Zn2+ solvation and transport for high‐efficiency ...

Solution‐Processed Thin‐Film Transistors With Tunable Temporal Dynamics for Neuromorphic Computing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Solution‐processed CNT and CNT/P3HT ion‐gated transistors exhibit materials‐defined synaptic timescales: fast CNT devices for high‐frequency spiking and slow hybrid devices for temporal integration. Embedding these dynamics into coupled reservoir‐computing and spiking neural network simulations reveals that a Hybrid‐Reservoir / CNT‐SNN architecture ...
