Alluvial ridge morphology on avulsing rivers

open access: yesSedimentology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Alluvial ridges are built by preferential channel‐belt deposition and control river avulsions, yet a systematic analysis of their morphology has been missing. To address this gap, we analyse a globally distributed dataset of 8970 alluvial ridge flanks on 14 different rivers.

Numerical and Experimental Investigation of Wave Overtopping of Barriers [PDF]

open access: yesWater, 2020
We present a study of wave overtopping of barriers. The phenomenon of the wave overtopping over emerged structures is reproduced both numerically and experimentally. The numerical simulations are carried out by a numerical scheme for three-dimensional free-surface flows, which is based on the solution of the Navier–Stokes equations in a novel integral ...

Eco-Engineering of Seawalls—An Opportunity for Enhanced Climate Resilience From Increased Topographic Complexity

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2021
In the context of “green” approaches to coastal engineering, the term “eco-engineering” has emerged in recent years to describe the incorporation of ecological concepts (including artificially water-filled depressions and surface textured tiles on ...

Low‐threshold cutaneous mechanoreceptors on the foot sole have enhanced sensitivity when skin temperature is elevated

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Schematic illustration of microneurography recordings used to examine the effects of local skin heating on cutaneous mechanoreceptor responses in the human foot (left panel). A microelectrode inserted into a peripheral nerve records single‐unit activity from tactile afferent fibres while controlled mechanical stimuli are applied ...

An Experimental Study of Wave Overtopping Characteristics on the Structure for Wave Overtopping Power Generating System

open access: yesJournal of Korean navigation and port research, 2006
Waves progressing into the coastal area can be amplified, swashed and overtopped by a wave overtopping control structure, and it converts the kinetic energy of the waves to the potential energy with a hydraulic head above the mean sea level by conserving the overflow in a reservoir.

Direct Policy Search for a Risk‐Based Levee Design Framework With Scenario Reduction

open access: yesJournal of Flood Risk Management, Volume 19, Issue 3, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Risk‐based management of coastal flood risk using realistic, process‐based models poses computational challenges, particularly when addressing uncertainties like sea‐level rise. This study explores the use of direct policy search (DPS) as a state‐dependent, adaptive decision‐making approach for upgrading levee systems.

Computational investigation of the relationship between landslide-related conditions and resultant dam overtopping waves

open access: yesEngineering Applications of Computational Fluid Mechanics
The landslide-induced overtopping waves on the dam possesses the potential to release significant energy, presenting a severe hazard to infrastructures and human lives downstream.

Experimental study on multi-level overtopping wave energy convertor under regular wave conditions

open access: yesInternational Journal of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, 2018
A multi-level overtopping wave energy converter was designed according to the large tidal range and small wave heights in China. It consists of two reservoirs with sloping walls at different levels.

Impact of an extreme storm event on a multiple intertidal barred coastal system

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 51, Issue 8, August 2026.
Extreme storms do not necessarily cause extreme coastal erosion. Integrated DGPS surveys and SWAN nearshore wave modelling reveal that Storm Barra's peak coincided with a low‐tide stage, allowing multiple intertidal bars (MITBs) to dissipate incoming wave energy before it reached Dundrum Bay's shoreline, highlighting the combined role of tidal stage ...
