Statistical Characterisation of Extreme Overtopping Wave Volumes

The starting point for this paper is the recently developed formula for the shape parameter of the Weibull distribution of overtopping wave volumes at a coastal defence. The goal of this master thesis is to describe the spatial distribution of the wave overtopping discharge over and behind the crest of a coastal defence structure. The influence of the most relevant parameters on this process is explored. This research has been performed by means of a physical model.

Rates of wave overtopping of structures can be predicted by means of an equation presented in the Shore Protection Manual (SPM)(eg. 7-6, U.S. Army, Corps of Engineers, Coastal Engineering Research Center, 1975; Weggel, 1976). Implicit in the use of this equation is the assumption of monochromatic waves; i.e., waves of uniform height and period.
