Asymptotic wave-splitting in anisotropic linear acoustics

open access: yes, 2010
In the present paper, we present a simple wave-splitting procedure for instantaneously reacting anisotropic media that includes spatial variation in depth.

Karl Popper and the Mechanisms of Hydrogen Embrittlement

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Representation of the beginning of loss of ductility rather than embrittlement. Small concentrations of hydrogen in a diffusible form within iron are well‐established to harm the mechanical integrity of steels. There are theories that attempt to explain the pernicious role of hydrogen.

Short-wave infrared Mueller matrices and polarization parameters for in vivo skin surface reflectance

open access: yes, 2018
Short-wave infrared light is weakly absorbed by human epidermal and dermal tissue. Investigation of polarization characteristics of human skin taken in vivo distinguishes how depolarization index and the Mueller matrix are markers that can identify skin ...

Robust Spot Melting by 3D Spot Arrangements in Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work proposes an approach to replace separately melted contours for spot melting in electron beam powder fusion. Adapting the spot arrangements close to the contour combined with stacking yields a comparable surface quality without the inherent challenges of separate contours, as demonstrated, by electron optical images and roughness measurements.

Numerical simulation of detonation wave propagation and quenching process in in-line crimped-ribbon flame arrester

open access: yesCogent Engineering, 2018
A new numerical model for simulating the propagation and quenching of a detonation wave in in-line flame arrester was developed by using FORTRAN language.

Ocean Wave Parameters Retrieval from Sentinel-1 SAR Imagery

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2016
In this paper, a semi-empirical algorithm for significant wave height (Hs) and mean wave period (Tmw) retrieval from C-band VV-polarization Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery is presented.

Microstructure Evolution of a VMnFeCoNi High‐Entropy Alloy After Synthesis, Swaging, and Annealing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The synthesis and processing (rotary swaging and annealing) of the novel VMnFeCoNi alloy is investigated, alongside the estimation of the grain size effect on hardness. Analysis of a wide grain size range of recrystallized microstructures (12–210 µm) reveals a low annealing twin density.

Current Status and Challenges in Data Collection for Aerospace Coatings Deposited by Plasma Spraying

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
An innovative approach has been integrated into the GRENAT project to optimize plasma spraying and coating performance. Raw materials are accelerated and melted in the plasma generated by torches, creating coatings. Monitoring sensors collect process data which are combined with ex situ characterization data.

On the Long-term Behaviour of Wind-Wave Climatology over the West Region of Scotland, UK

open access: yesRenewable Energy and Sustainable Development, 2015
Using 38 years (January 1973-December 2010) of hourly wind records, the present paper aims at drawing the possible long-term trends of winds and ten surface wave parameters over the west region of Scotland using the quadratic regression approach.

Optimal damping profiles for a heaving buoy wave-energy converter [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
This paper explores optimal damping profiles for a heaving buoy wave energy converter (WEC). The approach is mathematical and the model of Eidsmoen (1995) is used as a basis.
