Optimal waveform selection for tracking systems

IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, 1994
Summary: We investigate adaptive waveform selection schemes where selection is based on overall target tracking system performance. Optimal receiver assumptions allow the inclusion of transmitted waveform specification parameters in the tracking subsystem defining equations.

Optimization of signal waveforms

IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, 1963
A technique is described whereby it is possible to determine a set of waveforms that minimize the error rate for a digital communication system. The waveforms are generated from a finite set of orthogonal waveforms. Each character waveform has the same energy as any other character waveform.

Optimal waveform design for cognitive radar

2008 42nd Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems and Computers, 2008
A key component of a cognitive radar system is the method by which the transmitted waveform is adapted in response to information regarding the radar environment. The goal of such adaptation methods is to provide a flexible framework that can synthesize waveforms that provide different tradeoffs between a variety of performance objectives, and can do ...

On waveform design for optimal target discrimination

International Journal of Imaging Systems and Technology, 1992
AbstractProbability theory is applied to the problem of radar target discrimination. The theory is used to construct an excitation waveform (an enhanced discrimination pulse) which maximizes the posterior odds in favor of one target over the other. It is shown that the enhanced discrimination pulse has its spectrum concentrated near the frequency where

Autocorrelation Constraints in Radar Waveform Optimization for Detection

IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems, 2012
We consider the design of radar transmit waveforms that are optimal for the purposes of detecting multiple unknown targets in a known interference environment. Specifically, we introduce constraints on the waveform's autocorrelation function, which is of fundamental importance in practice.

Gradient-Based Optimization of PCFM Radar Waveforms

IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems, 2021
While a number of signal structures have been proposed for radar, frequency modulation (FM) remains the most common in practice because it is well-suited to high-power transmitters, which tend to introduce significant distortion to other waveform classes.

Optimal Pressure Waveforms for Pressure-Limited Ventilation

Mathematical Medicine and Biology, 1987
In this paper, we find the pressure waveform that minimizes the work of distending the alveoli in the lungs while achieving the desired mean airway pressure and alveolar tidal volume. The model used takes into account the compliance of the airway.

Nonquadratic Regularization for Waveform Optimization

2006 IEEE Conference on Radar, 2006
An adaptive algorithm for eigen-based waveform optimization is presented. The algorithm is capable of improving the matched filter signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of a radar operating in a colored interference environment while simultaneously constraining the shape of the matched filter response. To arrive at the algorithm cost function,

Optimal Recognition Of Neural Waveforms

Proceedings of the Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Volume 13: 1991, 2005
The investigation of biological neural networks requires reliable classification of neural action potentials in extracellular recordings. When the signal-to-noise ratio is bw, when the spike waveforms gradually change shape and amplitude, or when spikes overlap, the current sorting techniques cannot provide robust on-line operation due to their noise ...

Optimal waveform selection for radar target classification

Proceedings of International Conference on Image Processing, 2002
We apply a sequential experiment design procedure to the problem of signal selection for radar target classification. Radar waveforms are designed to discriminate between targets possessing a doubly-spread reflectivity function that are observed in clutter.
