MEMS reflective wavefront sensor

SPIE Proceedings, 2007
Sandia National Laboratory has constructed several segmented MEMS deformable mirrors that are under investigation for their suitability in Adaptive Optics systems for the Naval Research Laboratory. These mirrors are constructed in a hexagonal array and have been constructed with flat surfaces, or with optical power allowing each mirror to bring its

A novel wavefront sensor for interferometry

SPIE Proceedings, 2003
A new design for a wavefront sensor suitable for low-order low-light correction is shown. The hybrid modal sensor, the Nine Element (NE) sensor, is compared with a curvature sensor and quadcell under single aperture applications. The design of the NE sensor allows the use of readily-available array detectors.

Absolute calibration of a Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor for measurements of wavefronts

OPTO, 2019
A high-quality flat wave front is usually used to calibrate the Shach-Hartmann wave-front sensors. The article discusses the possibility of calibrating sensors with spherical wave fronts.

Wavefront Sensors — The Eyes

2009
If life were simple, we could just go to our local hardware store and there between the mousetraps and the power tools would be an optical phasemeter. We could buy it and take it back to our lab and put it into the adaptive optics system. If only wavefront sensors could be that simple.

x–y curvature wavefront sensor

Optics Letters, 2015
In this Letter, we propose a new curvature wavefront sensor based on the principles of optical differentiation. The theoretically modeled setup consists of a diffractive optical mask placed at the intermediate plane of a classical two-lens coherent optical processor. The resulting image is composed of a number of local derivatives of the entrance pupil

Compact multireference wavefront sensor design

Optics Letters, 2005
We present a compact optical design for a multireference Shack-Hartmann-based wavefront sensor (WFS) for multiconjugate adaptive optical systems. The key component of this WFS design is a field lenslet array that separates the exit pupil images in the sensing plane for all reference sources. An analytical method for WFS optical design is presented, and

A modal approach to optical gain compensation for the pyramid wavefront sensor

Astronomical Telescopes + Instrumentation, 2018
Extremely Large Telescopes are making Pyramid Wavefront Sensors (PWFS) the preferred engineering choice for Adaptive Optics designs, such as the MICADO camera SCAO subsystem currently developed at LESIA.

Wavefront sensors in Adaptive Optics [PDF]

open access: possible, 2008
Atmospheric turbulence limits the resolving power of astronomical telescopes by distorting the paths of light between distant objects of interest and the imaging camera at the telescope. After many light-years of travel, passing through the turbulence in that last 100km of a photon’s journey results in a blurred image in the telescope, no less than 1” (

CMOS integrated wavefront sensor

2001
We report on a CMOS implementation of an integrated Hartmann wavefront sensor (WFS) formed by an array of 8×8 addressable quad-cells with an analog demultiplexor and sampling-rate controller integrated on-chip.
