Dielectric rectangular waveguide and directional coupler for integrated optics

, 1969
We study the transmission properties of a guide consisting of a dielectric rod with rectangular cross section, surrounded by several dielectrics of smaller refractive indices.

Optical Waveguide Modes [PDF]

open access: possible, 1982
The optical waveguide is the fundamental element that interconnects the various devices of an optical integrated circuit, just as a metallic strip does in an electrical integrated circuit. However, unlike electrical current that flows through a metal strip according to Ohm’s law, optical waves travel in the waveguide in distinct optical modes.

The waveguide coupler between fiber and slab waveguide

2017 18th International Conference on Electronic Packaging Technology (ICEPT), 2017
For the past few years, optical interconnects technology has been developed rapidly. At the same time, many problems and difficulties need to be solved immediately. There is a difficult problem in optical coupling that the coupling efficiency between fiber and slab waveguide is quite low.

Grating-Mediated Waveguiding

Physical Review Letters, 2004
We propose a method of optical waveguiding, which relies on Bragg diffractions from a 1D grating that gives rise to waveguiding in the direction normal to the grating wave vector. The waveguide structure consists of a shallow 1D grating that has a bell- or trough-shaped amplitude in the confinement direction.

Waveguide-mode sensors with sculptured porous waveguide

SPIE Proceedings, 2013
We have investigated feasibility of waveguide-mode sensors, which is sensitized by a nanocolumnar SiO2 waveguide layer deposited by an oblique angle deposition technique. Because the effective refractive index of nanocolumns and fluid composites (n1) depends on that of fluid (n2), sensitivity of the waveguide-mode sensors is expected to be improved. In

Optical Waveguide Refractometers

2005
In this chapter we have illustrated a new method for the determination of the refractive index of liquid samples, based on Cerenkov second harmonic generation from suitable planar waveguides. The method allows the determination of the refractive index in the near infrared by detection in the visible.

Losses in Optical Waveguides

1982
Chapters 2 and 3 have explained cutoff conditions in waveguides and described the various optical modes which can be supported. Following the question as to which modes propagate, the next most important characteristic of a waveguide is the attenuation, or loss, that a light wave experiences as it travels through the guide.

Theory of Waveguides

2013
The analytical and numerical models and methods of waveguides and integrated transmission lines are reviewed in this Chapter. Among them are the separation of the variables method and the transverse resonance one. Engineering formulas obtained by the conformal technique for most used integrated transmission lines are given and the accuracy of them are ...
