A method for generating a microwave vortex field [PDF]
In this paper, we propose an on-end structure of a circular waveguide that forms a vortex field of the microwave range. We construct its numerical model.

Lectures on Theory of Microwave and Optical Waveguides [PDF]
The lecture notes document the mathematical theory of microwave and optical waveguides. We start with reviewing preliminary background from Maxwell's equations. Then we discuss hollow waveguides, and inhomogeneously-filled waveguides, coupling of waveguides and cavities, discontinuities in waveguides.

Waveguiding properties of surface states in photonic crystals [PDF]
We propose and analyze novel surface-state-based waveguides in bandgap photonic crystals. We discuss surface mode band structure, field localization and effect of imperfections on the waveguiding properties of the surface modes. We demonstrate that surface-state-based waveguides can be used to achieve directional emission out of the waveguide.

Quasi-flat bands in waveguide arrays [PDF]
Coupled electromagnetic waves propagating in a waveguide array are discussed. This waveguide array can be considered as one dimensional photon crystal composed from the unit cell containing three different waveguides, namely, two positive refraction index waveguides and one waveguide with negative refraction index.

Are slot and sub-wavelength grating waveguides better than strip waveguides for sensing? [PDF]
The unique ability of slot and sub-wavelength grating (SWG) waveguides to confine light outside of the waveguide core material has attracted significant interest in their application to chemical and biological sensing. However, high sensitivity to sidewall roughness induced scattering loss in these structures compared to strip waveguides casts doubt on

Single-photon non-linear optics with a quantum dot in a waveguide [PDF]
Strong non-linear interactions between photons enable logic operations for both classical and quantum-information technology. Unfortunately, non-linear interactions are usually feeble and therefore all-optical logic gates tend to be inefficient.

Integrated liquid core AntiResonant Reflecting Optical Waveguide (ARROW) are used as basic component for the realization of complex optofluidic devices. Liquid core ARROW waveguides permit to confine the light in a low refractive index liquid core, by means of two high refractive index cladding layers designed to form a high reflectivity Fabry-Perot ...

Mobile Waveguides: Freestanding Waveguides Steered by Light [PDF]
Microstructured optical fibers (MOFs) and photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) offer advanced photonic and microfluidic functionalities in a single, integrated platform. This unique combination constitutes the main axis for the emerging “lab-in-fiber” protocol.

A Directly-Written Monolithic Waveguide-Laser Incorporating a DFB Waveguide-Bragg Grating [PDF]
We report the fabrication and performance of the first C-band directly-written monolithic waveguide-laser. The waveguide-laser device was created in an Erbium and Ytterbium doped phosphate glass host and consisted of an optical waveguide that included a distributed feedback Bragg grating structure.
