Si-Ge-Silica Monolithic Integration Platform and Its Application to a 22-Gb/s $\times$ 16-ch WDM Receiver

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2013
We describe a Si-Ge-silica monolithic integration platform for telecommunications applications. The monolithic integration process features low-temperature silica film deposition by electron-cyclotron-resonance chemical vapor deposition to prevent ...

Optofluidic Raman Analysis and Capacity Recovery in Li‐ion Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Operando Raman spectroscopy is used to monitor the degradation of commercial Li‐ion cells. Using a microfluidic access port, small amounts of electrolyte are sampled into a hollow‐core optical fibre, where fibre‐enhanced Raman analysis reveals Li+ solvation changes and solvent evolution.

Enhanced Self‐Phase Modulation in Silicon Nitride Waveguides Integrated With 2D MoS2 Films

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT On‐chip integration of 2D materials provides a promising route toward next‐generation integrated optical devices with performance beyond existing limits. Here, significantly enhanced spectral broadening induced by self‐phase modulation (SPM) is experimentally demonstrated in silicon nitride (Si3N4) waveguides integrated with 2D monolayer ...

Record Performance in Vertically Stacked, Solution‐Processed ZTO Schottky Diodes

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Schottky diodes based on solution processed sustainable zinc—tin–oxide thin films present an eco‐friendly and versatile alternative to conventional CMOS based technologies. Beyond state‐of‐the‐art performance for vertically stacked solution‐based oxide diodes was achieved, including rectification ratios exceeding nine orders of magnitude, and intrinsic

Coupling of Er3+ ions and Plasmonic Modes in Vertical Nanocavities for Spectral Broadening in Telecom Bands

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Left: Illustration of the glass & nanostructures system and the NIR emission at 1.5 µm, where the colored spheres represent the Er3+ ions within the doped glass. Right: Representation of the Stark splitting of the 4I13/2 and 4I15/2 manifolds of the Er3+, illustrating how the plasmonic modes facilitate the emission from the broader Stark manifold ...

Super‐Robust Telecommunications Enabled by Topological Half‐Supermodes

open access: yesAdvanced Science
Topological photonics offer transformative potential for robust integrated waveguide devices due to their backscattering‐immune properties. However, their integration faces two fundamental challenges: mode symmetry mismatch with conventional waveguides ...

The Evolution of Laser‐Induced Damage Patterns in Polymer Stabilized Liquid Crystals: Insights From Morphological Characterization and Thermo‐Driven Simulations

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
A dual‐domain PSLC architecture enables direct comparison of alignment‐dependent laser damage within a single device. Crack‐like and seal‐like morphologies emerge under different damage conditions, and their evolution is interpreted through quantitative image analysis and heat‐driven simulations.

Room-temperature excitonic absorption in quantum wires

open access: yes, 2005
We measured absorption spectra of T-shaped quantum wires at room temperature using waveguide-transmission spectroscopy. Strong and narrow room-temperature one-dimensional-exciton absorption peak was observed, which shows peak modal absorption coefficient

From Strain to Pressure: Atomically Resolved Mechanisms of Stress Dissipation in Emissive, Elastically Deformable Molecular Crystals Under Ambient and High Pressure

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Molecular crystals must withstand both isotropic and anisotropic stress to function in flexible optoelectronics and high‐pressure devices. In situ high‐pressure single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction coupled with DFT‐D computations reveal how an emissive molecular crystal with interdigitated packing bends elastically at ambient‐pressure and remains ...

Photonic ring resonator filters for astronomical OH suppression

open access: yes, 2017
Ring resonators provide a means of filtering specific wavelengths from a waveguide, and optionally dropping the filtered wavelengths into a second waveguide. Both of these features are potentially useful for astronomical instruments.
