Breakthroughs in Photonics 2014: Relaxed Total Internal Reflection

open access: yes, 2015
Total internal reflection (TIR) is a ubiquitous phenomenon used in photonic devices ranging from waveguides and resonators to lasers and optical sensors.

On the resonances of the Laplacian on waveguides

open access: yesJournal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications, 2002
The resonances for the Dirichlet and Neumann Laplacian are studied on compactly perturbed waveguides. An upper bound on the number of resonances near the physical plane is proven. In the absence of resonances, an upper bound is proven for the localised resolvent.

Flexible Polymer Planar Optical Waveguides [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We report about design, fabrication and properties of flexible polymer optical planar waveguides made of Epoxy Novolak Resin as planar waveguides deposited on various foil substrates.

Complex-k modes of plasmonic chain waveguides

open access: yes, 2019
Nanoparticle chain waveguide based on negative-epsilon material is investigated through a generic 3D finite-element Bloch-mode solver which derives complex propagation constant ($k$).

Compact Optical Waveguides Based on Hybrid Index and Surface-Plasmon-Polariton Guidance Mechanisms

open access: yesActive and Passive Electronic Components, 2007
Surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) waveguides made of materials available in nature have, in general, been found to suffer from very high absorption loss when light confinement is beyond diffraction limit.

Modelling of microstructured waveguides using a finite-element-based vectorial mode solver with transparent boundary conditions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Finite element vectorial optical mode solver is used to analyze microstructured waveguides in a relatively small computational domain. The presentation will consider the computational method, as well as the applications of it on a number of waveguides ...

Azimuthons in weakly nonlinear waveguides of different symmetries

open access: yes, 2010
We show that weakly guiding nonlinear waveguides support stable propagation of rotating spatial solitons (azimuthons). We investigate the role of waveguide symmetry on the soliton rotation.

Optofluidics: waveguides and devices

open access: yesSPIE Proceedings, 2012
In this work we review recent results of our work on optofluidics. We show that single mode optofluidic waveguides with low loss can be realized using antiresonant reflecting optical confinement (ARROW). These waveguides can be fabricated using full standard silicon technology or hybrid silicon-polymer processes.

A multi-layer platform for low-loss nonlinear silicon photonics

open access: yesAPL Photonics, 2019
We demonstrate four-wave mixing (FWM) interactions in a-Si:H waveguides in a multilayer integrated silicon photonic chip. The a-Si:H waveguides are accessed through interlayer couplers from waveguides composed of SiNx.
