Difference frequency generation by quasi-phase matching in periodically intermixed semiconductor superlattice waveguides [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Wavelength conversion by difference frequency generation is demonstrated in domain-disordered quasi-phase-matched waveguides. The waveguide structure consisted of a GaAs/AlGaAs superlattice core that was periodically intermixed by ion implantation.

Ultrashort Pulse Written Waveguides in Silicon

open access: yes, 2023
We report on the inscription of waveguides in the bulk of crystalline silicon using infrared ultrashort laser pulses. The waveguides are characterized with respect to their structure, refractive index profile and guiding properties in ...

Strain‐Programmable Luminescent Adhesive Patch With Tartrazine‐Mediated Optical Skin Clearing for Photochemical Tissue Bonding

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We propose a suture‐complementary approach that integrates optical skin clearing with a strain‐programmable luminescent adhesive patch. Hyaluronic acid promotes transdermal delivery of tartrazine to improve optical clearing and stabilizes its interaction with a photosensitizer. Optical clearing increases the penetration depth of visible light into skin,

Dielectric Sensors Based on Electromagnetic Energy Tunneling

open access: yesSensors, 2015
We show that metallic wires embedded in narrow waveguide bends and channels demonstrate resonance behavior at specific frequencies. The electromagnetic energy at these resonances tunnels through the narrow waveguide channels with almost no propagation ...

Novel Modulation and Detection Mechanisms in Silicon Nanophotonics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
A number of nanophotonic integrated circuits are presented, which take advantage of the unique properties that light has when guided in very small waveguides to achieve novel functionality.

Optoelectronic Synaptic Devices Using Molecular Telluride Phase‐Change Inks for Three‐Factor Learning

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Optoelectronic synaptic devices based on solution‐processed molecular telluride GST‐225 phase‐change inks are demonstrated for three‐factor learning. A global optical signal broadcast through a silicon waveguide induces non‐volatile conductance updates exclusively in locally electrically flagged memristors.

Supercontinuum in integrated photonics: generation, applications, challenges, and perspectives

open access: yesNanophotonics, 2023
Frequency conversion in nonlinear materials is an extremely useful solution to the generation of new optical frequencies. Often, it is the only viable solution to realize light sources highly relevant for applications in science and industry.

Invisible Polymer Walls Enhance Reorientational Optical Nonlinearity in Oligothiophene‐Doped Liquid Crystals

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The polymer wall stabilized dye‐doped liquid crystals (PWLCs) enhance the sensitivity of photoinduced molecular reorientation in dye‐doped LC systems. The PWLC with an invisible polymer wall successfully reduces the threshold intensity and functions as an optical limiter under the incidence of low intensity light laser source.

Silicon-on-Nitride Waveguide With Ultralow Dispersion Over an Octave-Spanning Mid-Infrared Wavelength Range

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2012
The proposed silicon-on-nitride (SON) waveguide exhibits an ultrabroadband (4200 nm), low chromatic dispersion in the mid-infrared (MIR) wavelength region from 2430 to 6630 nm. It has two zero-dispersion wavelengths within the span.
