A compact silicon-on-insulator device used for conversions between polarization division multiplexing (PDM) and mode division multiplexing (MDM) signals is proposed and experimentally demonstrated by utilizing a structure combining the improved two-dimensional grating coupler and two-mode multiplexer.

Multichannel wavelength division multiplexing with photonic crystals

A multichannel wavelength-division-multiplexing system consisting of a two-dimensional photonic crystal is proposed. The system consists of two parts, a waveguiding element, realized by defects in a photonic crystal, and frequency-selective elements, realized by photonic crystal microcavities.

Wavelength-division multiplexing with femtosecond pulses

We demonstrate wavelength-division multiplexing with a single broadband femtosecond source by slicing the 3.7-THz spectral bandwidth of 85-fs laser pulses into 16 channels that are modulated individually.
