Validation Test Report for WAVEWATCH III
2012Abstract : This document serves as the Validation Test Report for the WAVEWATCH III model transition to the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO). A literature review is given, focusing on prior validation efforts, such as those by FNMOC and NCEP comparing WAM and WAVEWATCH III.

Performance of WAVEWATCH-III and SWAN Models in the North Sea
Volume 11B: Honoring Symposium for Professor Carlos Guedes Soares on Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering, 2018This paper presents the hindcast of the winter of 2013 in the North Sea using two wave models: WAVEWATCH-III (WW3) and SWAN. The performance of the WW3 and SWAN models was assessed for this winter, when successive storms hit the hindcast area in a short time period, and examined in terms of the averaged wave parameters (Hs, peak period and wave ...

Establishment and tests of EnOI assimilation module for WAVEWATCH III
Chinese Journal of Oceanology and Limnology, 2015In this paper, we propose a parallel data assimilation module based on ensemble optimal interpolation (EnOI). We embedded the method into the full-spectral third-generation wind-wave model, WAVEWATCH III Version 3.14, producing a wave data assimilation system.

Implementation of Curvilinear Coordinate System in the WAVEWATCH III Model
2009Abstract : This document describes modifications to the WAVEWATCH III wave model (Tolman 2002a) by the Naval Research Laboratory, Code 7322. This work is primarily concerned with the implementation of arbitrary structured grid (i.e., curvilinear) approach. Verification test cases are presented.

Integration of Cygnss Wind and Wave Observations with the Wavewatch III Numerical Model
IGARSS 2019 - 2019 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2019The Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) mission employs measurements of the quasi-specular forward scattering cross section of the ocean surface for retrieving sea surface wind speed and roughness globally and, particularly, in the inner core of tropical cyclones.

Ocean Swell Comparisons Between Sentinel‐1 and WAVEWATCH III Around Australia
Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 2021AbstractAn intercomparison between directional wave spectra derived from Sentinel‐1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites and a WAVEWATCH III model hindcast in the wider Australian region is presented. The coastal buoy network around Australia is considerably sparse, and only a handful of buoy measurements exist in deeper oceans.

Numerical modeling of space-time wave extremes using WAVEWATCH III
Ocean Dynamics, 2017A novel implementation of parameters estimating the space-time wave extremes within the spectral wave modelWAVEWATCH III (WW3) is presented. The new output parameters, available in WW3 version 5.16, rely on the theoretical model of Fedele (J Phys Oceanogr 42( 9): 1601-1615, 2012) extended by Benetazzo et al. (J Phys Oceanogr 45( 9): 2261-2275, 2015) to

Implementation of WAVEWATCH III at Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center
MTS/IEEE Oceans 2001. An Ocean Odyssey. Conference Proceedings (IEEE Cat. No.01CH37295), 2002Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center (FNMOC) Is in the process of transitioning its operational models suite from a Cray C90 shared memory architecture to SGI Origin 2000 (O2K) and Origin 3000 (O3K) distributed memory systems. As part of this transition, the third generation WAVEWATCH III (WW3) wave model is currently being implemented ...

Assessing the wave energy potential in the Mediterranean Sea using WAVEWATCH III
Progress in Renewable Energies Offshore, 2016This paper presents a new contribution for the assessment of the wave energy potential in the Mediterranean Sea. The wave energy flux is evaluated on the basis of a hindcast for the period 2011–2014 using numerical modelling. The applied WAVEWATCH III model is forced by the wind data from NOAA.
