A Self-Healing WDM Access Network with Protected Fiber and FSO Link Paths Effective Against Fiber Breaks

open access: yesPhotonics
In this article, an additional protected fiber and free-space optical (FSO) link path is proposed, to provide self-healing capabilities for protection against fiber faults in wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) systems.

Polarization‐Independent Complex Bragg Grating Filters on Silicon Nitride

open access: yesLaser &Photonics Reviews, Volume 19, Issue 23, December 3, 2025.
This work demonstrates multi‐band polarization‐insensitive optical filters on the 400‐nm thick silicon nitride platform, complying with the LAN‐WDM standard. The filters are based on cladding‐modulated Bragg gratings with judiciously designed grating dimensions.

Upgrading and extending PON by using in-band WDM overlay

open access: yesJournal of Microwaves, Optoelectronics and Electromagnetic Applications
This paper presents a new approach to upgrade and extend the reach of the current passive optical network (PON) by using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) in the standardized optical grid of gigabit PON (In-band WDM PON overlay).

Demonstration of bidirectional wired and wireless services in integrated optical and wireless system carried by single wavelength lightwave [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
[[abstract]]We propose and demonstrate a novel RSOA-based WDM-PON architecture for converging Gb/s-NZR and 16QAM-OFDM ROF signals by employing wavelength reuse techniques.

Polarization‐dependent gain characterization in x‐cut LNOI erbium‐doped waveguide amplifiers

open access: yesNanophotonics, Volume 14, Issue 27, Page 5081-5094, December 2025.
Abstract Erbium‐doped waveguide amplifiers (EDWAs) are vital for photonic integration, yet most are built on z‐cut lithium niobate, incompatible with the mainstream x‐cut platform. This work presents a combined theoretical and experimental study of polarization‐dependent gain in x‐cut Er:LNOI. Using Judd–Ofelt theory, we analyze how crystal orientation

Proposal for an SDN‐Like Innovative Metro‐Access Optical Network Architecture

open access: yesInternational Journal of Optics, Volume 2019, Issue 1, 2019., 2019
Today, telecommunication operators are facing an epochal challenge due to the need of higher reconfigurability, flexibility, and dynamicity for their networks. In the latest years, this necessity has been addressed by the introduction of Software‐Defined Networking (SDN), mainly in the fields of data centers and core networks.

Fault-detection technique in a WDM-PON

open access: yesOptics Express, 2007
We propose and demonstrate a new in-service fault-localization method for a wavelength division multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON). This scheme uses a tunable OTDR realized by a wavelength-locked Fabry-Perot laser diode. We successfully detect the faults both at the feeder fiber and the drop fibers.
