Encoding and Perception of Electro-communication Signals in Apteronotus leptorhynchus

open access: yesFrontiers in Integrative Neuroscience, 2019
Animal communication plays an essential role in triggering diverse behaviors. It is believed in this regard that signal production by a sender and its perception by a receiver is co-evolving in order to have beneficial effects such as to ensure that ...

3D Bioprinted Glioblastoma Multiforme Models: How the Extracellular Matrix Glycosignature Influences Drug Response

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Aberrant glycosylation in the glioblastoma tumor microenvironment drives therapeutic resistance. Here, a 3D bioprinted model was engineered by incorporating α‐NeuNAc‐(2→3)‐β‐D‐Gal‐ and chondroitin sulfate. Combined multiplex immunofluorescence and synchrotron‐based nanoCT analysis revealed that glycan‐matrix interactions dictate specific drug‐escape ...

Dual‐Layer Conducting and Redox Polymer Bioanodes for Synergistic Enhancement of Microbial Extracellular Electron Transfer

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A hybrid PEDOT/Fc‐LPEI conducting/redox polymer bioanode synergistically improves microbial extracellular electron transfer (EET) in Shewanella oneidensis MR‐1. The dual‐layer interface delivers 18‐fold higher current output and 27‐fold greater charge collected than bare carbon felt, highlighting an effective strategy for high‐performance ...

Differential serotonergic modulation of two types of aggression in weakly electric fish

open access: yesFrontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience, 2012
Agonistic aggression has provided an excellent framework to study how conserved circuits and neurochemical mediators control species-specific and context-dependent behavior.

Bacterial Cellulose‐Based Bilayer Passive Cooler for High‐Performance Radiative/Evaporative Cooling

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A sustainable bilayer passive cooler based on bacterial cellulose integrates radiative and evaporative cooling for efficient zero‐energy temperature reduction. The scalable, low‐carbon material shows strong potential for food preservation, low‐temperature storage, and cold‐chain logistics.

Programming Nanoscale Reaction Environments via Peptide Localization for Gold Nanoparticle Growth in Liposomal Nanoreactors

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The liposome nanoreactor method enables uniform metal nanoparticle synthesis using the interior as a reaction environment. We demonstrate that peptide sequences and lipid compositions act as a functional molecular switch to control reaction environments in liposome nanoreactors.

Evolution of Time-Coding Systems in Weakly Electric Fishes [PDF]

open access: yesZoological Science, 2009
Weakly electric fishes emit electric organ discharges (EODs) from their tail electric organs and sense feedback signals from their EODs by electroreceptors in the skin. The electric sense is utilized for various behaviors, including electrolocation, electrocommunication, and the Jamming avoidance response (JAR).

Engineering Local Polar Frustration in Lead‐Free Dielectric Ceramics for Ultrahigh Normalized Energy Storage Performance

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Local polar frustration is engineered to stabilize an ergodic relaxer through nanoscale multiphase coexistence, suppressing long‐range ferroelectric order while preserving high polarization. This strategy delivers ultrahigh low‐field normalized energy density (Wa >0.020 mC cm−2), exceptional thermal stability, and a transferable design principle for ...

Model of P- and T-electroreceptors of weakly electric fish

open access: yesBiophysical Journal, 1996
To clarify the microscopic mechanisms by which P- and T-receptors encode amplitude modulation and zero crossing time of jamming signals, we present a model of P- and T-receptors based on their physiological and anatomical properties. The model consists of a receptor cell, supporting cells, and an afferent nerve fiber. The basal membrane of the receptor

Freeze‐Thaw Engineered Dual Conductivity Polymeric Binder Stabilizes Large‐Volume‐Change Lithium–Ion Battery Anodes

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work developed an all‐aqueous freeze‐thaw strategy to create a dual‐conductive PVA/P3KBT binder for high volume‐change lithium–ion battery anodes. The resulting binder system strengthens the electrode structure, supports ion and electron transport, and accommodates repeated volume changes, reducing cracking and improving long‐term cycling ...
