Seasonal body mass dynamics mediate life‐history trade‐offs in a hibernating mammal

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
We tested a suite of ecological hypotheses to explain variation in seasonal body mass dynamics of a fat‐storing mammalian hibernator. We further demonstrated that pre‐hibernation mass gain in ground squirrels mediates an annual allocation trade‐off between current and future reproduction as the squirrels forage and rear young under predation risk ...

Hair as sensory skin: sensitive bodies, ritual shaving, and the maintenance of bodily boundaries in Hindu Suriname De la pilosité comme peau sensorielle : corps sensibles, rasage rituel et maintien des limites du corps chez les hindous du Surinam

open access: yesJournal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, EarlyView.
Hair is an integral part of the skin's interface and has sensory capacity. Shameful or shameless? Anxieties about mothers and women's autonomy on the Central African Copperbelt, 1956–1964

open access: yesGender &History, EarlyView.
Abstract This article deals with anxiety about and the shaming of modern urban mothers and wives on the mines of the late colonial Central African Copperbelt. Women's various labours and public presence lead to ambivalent depictions, such as the ‘careless mother’, that were part of a broader array of anxieties about women's autonomy on the mines ...

Women's and Health Care Professionals' Experiences of Discontinuing Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT): A Systematic Review

open access: yesBJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics &Gynaecology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is used to manage menopausal symptoms, particularly vasomotor symptoms (VMS). HRT prescribing rates are rising, but most women will eventually discontinue. Objectives To explore the experiences of women stopping HRT, why women restart HRT, and the HCPs advising them. Starving or Stuffing? Plasticity in Wild Boar Body Mass Variations During Summer in a Mediterranean Area

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Assessing drivers of population dynamics helps to mitigate human–wildlife conflicts. In Mediterranean areas, summer aridity reduces resources, potentially affecting ungulates' body condition and reproduction. In a mixed forested‐rural area, wild boar female body mass increased throughout summer in rainy‐mild years and decreased in hot‐dry years.

(De)composing sociality: Disentangling individual‐specific from dyad‐specific propensities to interact

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, EarlyView.
Abstract In group‐living animals, relationships between group members are often highly differentiated. Some dyads can maintain strong and long‐lasting relationships, while others are only connected by weak or fleeting ties. More and more studies show that aspects of social relationships are related to reproductive success and survival.

Spatial price competition and buyer power in the U.S. beef packing industry

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Agricultural Economics, EarlyView.
Abstract We develop a spatially‐explicit model of the U.S. beef packing industry to study key questions related to competition in an oligopsony setting. Cattle supplies are modeled at the county level, and packing plants' location, capacity, and ownership are taken as given. Packers procure negotiated cattle by competing in prices in each local (county)

Healthcare Professional Survey on Complementary Feeding and Allergy Prevention in High‐ Versus Low‐Risk Infants: An EAACI Task Force Report

open access: yesAllergy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Complementary feeding (CF) influences infants' long‐term dietary preferences, growth, and food allergy (FA) risk. However, guidance given to families and the implementation of FA prevention guidelines by healthcare professionals (HCPs) remain unclear.
