Weather Forecasting for Weather Derivatives [PDF]
We take a simple time series approach to modeling and forecasting daily average temperature in U.S. cities, and we inquire systematically as to whether it may prove useful from the vantage point of participants in the weather derivatives market. The answer is, perhaps surprisingly, yes.

Laterites and paleoclimates. Weathering processes and anthropogenic impact [PDF]
The European Union of Geosciences held its 9th biannual meeting in Strasbourg, March 23–27, 1997. During this meeting, Symposium No. 63, Weathering Processes: Mineral deposits and soil formation in tropical enÍironments, was merged with Symposium No. 78,

Relationship between mineralogy and the physico-chemical properties of till in central Finland [PDF]
The chemical and physical characteristics of the fine fraction of till were examined in the area of the Raahe-Ladoga metallogenic belt in central Finland. Till, weathered bedrock and rock samples were collected from the area, where element concentrations

Silicate rock weathering and atmospheric/soil CO2 uptake in the Amazon basin estimated from river water geochemistry: seasonal and spatial variations [PDF]
Using the data of the CAMREX project (1982–1984) on the water geochemistry of the Amazon river and its main tributaries, it was possible to assess the silicate rock weathering processes and the associated consumption of atmospheric/soil CO2, taking into

Coevolution of Weathering Front and Water Table
Water is known to play an essential role in initiating and maintaining subsurface weathering reactions. However, the interaction between the weathering front and the water table is unclear and under intense debate.

Weathering microenvironments on feldspar surfaces: implications for understanding fluid-mineral reactions in soils [PDF]
The mechanisms by which coatings develop on weathered grain surfaces, and their potential impact on rates of fluid-mineral interaction, have been investigated by examining feldspars from a 1.1 ky old soil in the Glen Feshie chronosequence, Scottish ...

The international Anthropocene Working Group has recognized the mid-20th centrury (ca. 1950 CE) as the onset of the Anthropocene, but human activities in China altered the land cover and influenced weathering processes much earlier.

High potential for weathering and climate effects of non-vascular vegetation in the Late Ordovician [PDF]
It has been hypothesized that predecessors of today’s bryophytes significantly increased global chemical weathering in the Late Ordovician, thus reducing atmospheric CO2 concentration and contributing to climate cooling and an interval of glaciations ...

This chapter argues that paying attention to the weather and its associated processes of geological, biological, and social weathering can destabilize knowledge traditions that insist on dichotomies. Looking to specific histories and current conditions in Guyana and Suriname, this chapter shows how notions of weathering can accommodate a wide range of ...
