Web Search Studies: Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Web Search Engines

2009
Perhaps the most significant tool of our internet age is the web search engine, providing a powerful interface for accessing the vast amount of information available on the world wide web and beyond. While still in its infancy compared to the knowledge tools that precede it – such as the dictionary or encyclopedia – the impact of web search engines on ...

A visual sonificated web search clustering engine

Cognitive Processing, 2009
This work aimed at expanding the architecture of WhatsOnWeb (WoW; Di Giacomo et al. 2007) following accessibility and usability state-of-the-art criteria. WoW is a visual Web search engine that conveys the indexed dataset using graph-drawing methods on semantically clustered data.

Searching the Web with an FPGA Based Search Engine

2007
In this paper we describe an FPGA implementation for solving Internet ranking algorithms. Sparse Matrix by Vector multiplication forms a major part of these algorithms. Due to memory bandwidth problems, general purpose processors only achieve a fraction of peak processing power when dealing with sparse matrices.

Controlling the robots of Web search engines

Proceedings of the 2001 ACM SIGMETRICS international conference on Measurement and modeling of computer systems, 2001
Robots are deployed by a Web search engine for collecting information from different Web servers in order to maintain the currency of its data base of Web pages. In this paper, we investigate the number of robots to be used by a search engine so as to maximize the currency of the data base without putting an unnecessary load on the network.

The Web, the Home and the Search Engine

2011
The web search engine has come to occupy a central position in our information-seeking habits as citizens. This chapter explores the genesis of the idea of a search engine, and how this mechanism has developed in the web context. Search engines have adapted to the world of the web (in particular, to users and to the uses to which they have been put ...

Algorithmic Challenges in Web Search Engines

2006
We present the main algorithmic challenges that large Web search engines face today. These challenges are present in all the modules of a Web retrieval system, ranging from the gathering of the data to be indexed (crawling) to the selection and ordering of the answers to a query (searching and ranking).
