Searching the Web with Queries

Knowledge and Information Systems, 1999
In this paper we study the problem of searching the Web with online learning algorithms. We consider that Web documents can be represented by vectors of n boolean attributes. A search engine is viewed as a learner, and a user is viewed as a teacher. We investigate the number of queries a search engine needs from the user to search for a collection of ...

Exploiting Web querying for Web people search

ACM Transactions on Database Systems, 2012
Searching for people on the Web is one of the most common query types submitted to Web search engines today. However, when a person name is queried, the returned Webpages often contain documents related to several distinct namesakes who have the queried name.

Query Expansion for Improving Web Search

Journal of Computational and Theoretical Nanoscience, 2020
The aim of this paper is to retrieve the most relevant expansion words for expanding the initial query of the user in order to enhance the outcomes of web search results. Query expansion plays a major role in reformulating a user’s initial query to a one more pertinent to the user’s intended meaning.

Query association surrogates for Web search

Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, 2004
AbstractCollection sizes, query rates, and the number of users of Web search engines are increasing. Therefore, there is continued demand for innovation in providing search services that meet user information needs. In this article, we propose new techniques to add additional terms to documents with the goal of providing more accurate searches.

Querying and searching the deep web

Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Web Intelligence, Mining and Semantics, 2017
The term Deep Web (sometimes also called Hidden Web) [2, 5, 8] refers to the data content that is accessible through Web pages, typically via HTML forms, but is not available on static pages for indexing by search engines. Deep Web data reside in databases and are made available dynamically, as Web pages, upon a specific search or query.

Identifying ambiguous queries in web search

Proceedings of the 16th international conference on World Wide Web, 2007
It is widely believed that some queries submitted to search engines are by nature ambiguous (e.g., java, apple). However, few studies have investigated the questions of "how many queries are ambiguous?" and "how can we automatically identify an ambiguous query?" This paper deals with these issues.

Trends in multimedia Web searching: excite queries

Proceedings. International Conference on Information Technology: Coding and Computing, 2005
This paper provides results from a study analyzing current trends in multimedia Web searching. The following results were found: (1) multimedia searches are more complex than general searches in queries per user session and terms per query, and (2) audio queries are the most popular type of multimedia queries (compared to video and image queries) in ...

Towards Web Search by Sentence Queries: Asking the Web for Query Substitutions

2011
In this paper, we propose a method to search the Web for sentence substitutions for a given sentence query. Our method uses only lexico-syntactic patterns dynamically generated from the input sentence query to collect sentence substitutions from the Web on demand.

Query aspects approach to web search

Web Intelligence, 2016
This paper introduces an aspect based model for analysing search queries, where queries are represented as aspects or concepts instead of “bag of words” or strings. A search query may consist of multiple aspects, while some aspects are covered well in the search results and some others are underrepresented.

Identification of ambiguous queries in web search

Information Processing & Management, 2009
It is widely believed that many queries submitted to search engines are inherently ambiguous (e.g., java and apple). However, few studies have tried to classify queries based on ambiguity and to answer ''what the proportion of ambiguous queries is''. This paper deals with these issues.
