Coupled Mooring Analyses for the WEC-Sim Wave Energy Converter Design Tool [PDF]
A wave-energy-converter-specific time-domain modeling method (WEC-Sim) was coupled with a lumped-mass-based mooring model (MoorDyn) to improve its mooring dynamics modeling capability. This paper presents a verification and validation study on the coupled numerical method.

Demonstration of the Recent Additions in Modeling Capabilities for the WEC-Sim Wave Energy Converter Design Tool [PDF]
WEC-Sim is a midfidelity numerical tool for modeling wave energy conversion devices. The code uses the MATLAB SimMechanics package to solve multibody dynamics and models wave interactions using hydrodynamic coefficients derived from frequency domain boundary element methods. This paper presents the new modeling features introduced in the latest release

Preliminary Verification and Validation of WEC-Sim, an Open-Source Wave Energy Converter Design Tool [PDF]
To promote and support the wave energy industry, a wave energy converter (WEC) design tool, WEC-Sim, is being developed by Sandia National Laboratories and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. In this paper, the WEC-Sim code is used to model a point absorber WEC designed by the U.S. Department of Energy’s reference model project.

TEAMER: AquaHarmonics - High Fidelity WEC - Sim PTO & Control Model Validation
A WEC-Sim model was developed for the 1:7 scale Aquaharmonics WEC. The original WEC geometry was defeatured to facilitate the BEM simulations to calculate the hydrodynamic coefficients. The team faced some issues during this stage of the project because the WEC device has water inside its hull.

Abstract One of several challenges that wave energy technologies face is their inability to generate electricity cost-competitively with other grid-scale energy generation sources. Several studies have identified two approaches to lower the levelised cost of electricity: reduce the cost over the device’s lifetime or increase its overall ...
