Characteristic strength and Weibull modulus of selected infrared-transmitting materials
Optical Engineering, 2002The results of fracture testing are usually reported in terms of a measured strength s M5s i6Ds i, where s i is the average of the re- corded peak stresses at failure, and Ds i represents the standard devia- tion. This ''strength'' does not provide an objective measure of the intrin- sic strength since s M depends on the test method and the size of the

Unbiased estimation of Weibull modulus using linear least squares analysis—A systematic approach
Abstract The wide applicability of the Weibull distribution to fields such as hydrology and materials science has led to a large number of probability estimators being proposed, in particular for the widely used technique of obtaining the Weibull modulus, m, using unweighted linear least squares (LLS) analysis.

Influence of Granule Character on Strength and Weibull Modulus of Sintered Alumina
Journal of the American Ceramic Society, 1999Alumina specimens were prepared by compacting well‐characterized spray‐dried alumina granules of excellent deformability, followed by sintering. The strength and Weibull modulus were measured and microstructure was evaluated for specimens prepared from granules with different density and morphology.

Influence of tilt filling on Weibull modulus of 2L99 aluminium investment castings
Materials Science and Technology, 2007A detailed investigation has been made of the tilt pouring of investment castings in order to reduce oxide film entrainment and hence improve their reliability. A computer controlled tilt casting machine has been developed to fill moulds using single and multi stage cycles.

Characteristic strength, Weibull modulus, and failure probability of fused silica glass
Optical Engineering, 2009The development of high-energy lasers has focused attention on the requirement to assess the mechanical strength of optical components made of fused silica or fused quartz (SiO2). The strength of this material is known to be highly dependent on the stressed area and the surface finish, but has not yet been properly characterized in the published ...

Part I: Porosity dependence of the Weibull modulus for hydroxyapatite and other brittle materials
Journal of the Mechanical Behavior of Biomedical Materials, 2012Porous brittle materials are used as filters, catalyst supports, solid oxide fuel cells and biomedical materials. However the literature on the Weibull modulus, m, versus volume fraction porosity, P, is extremely limited despite the importance of m as a gauge of mechanical reliability.

Weibull modulus of fracture strength of toughened ceramics subjected to small-scale contacts
Journal of Materials Science, 2001The Weibull modulus of toughened ceramics was evaluated. The fracture of the toughened ceramics was assumed to be initiated by surface cracks induced during small-scale contacts such as grinding and polishing and an exponential function was selected to describe the R-curve behavior.

Estimator type and population size for estimating the weibull modulus in ceramics
Journal of the European Ceramic Society, 1998Analysis of fracture data in ceramics can be made by applying probabilistic theories. In order the fracture probability to be expressed an estimator must be used. For economic reasons it is also necessary, the population size for estimating the shape ceramic parameter, to be found. In the present work a number of estimators and sets of different sample
