An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Total weight choosability in Hypergraphs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
A total weighting of the vertices and edges of a hypergraph is called vertex-coloring if the total weights of the vertices yield a proper coloring of the graph, i.e., every edge contains at least two vertices with different weighted degrees. In this note

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

Online Importance Weight Aware Updates [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
An importance weight quantifies the relative importance of one example over another, coming up in applications of boosting, asymmetric classification costs, reductions, and active learning.

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Probing deformation mechanisms of CoCrFeNiMn0.75Cu0.25 highentropy alloy after thermo-mechanical treatment using in situ EBSD investigation

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology
In this study, the CoCrFeNiMn0.75Cu0.25 high-entropy alloy (HEA) was systematically investigated to elucidate the effects of different annealing temperatures on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the face-centered cubic (fcc) structural ...

Weight Discrimination: A Multidisciplinary Analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
Protection against obesity discrimination is extremely limited under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). No obese plaintiff has won using the actual disability theory, but a few have won under the perceived disability theory.

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Barriers to Care for Pediatric Patients with Obesity

open access: yesLife
This review article emphasizes the challenges pediatric patients face during obesity treatment. Prior research has been compartmentalized, acknowledging that stigma, the ability to implement lifestyle changes, social health determinants, and healthcare ...
