The nicotinamide hypothesis revisited—plant defense signaling integrating PARP, nicotinamide, nicotinic acid, epigenetics, and glutathione

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nicotinamide (NIC) and nicotinic acid (NIA) are proposed as stress signaling compounds in plants. Oxidative stress may lead to single strand breaks (SSB) in DNA, which activate poly(ADP‐ribose) polymerase (PARP). NIC and NIA are then formed from NAD. NIC and NIA can promote epigenetic changes leading to the expression of defense genes specific for the ...

Low hydroxychloroquine blood levels in patients who have had gastric bypass surgery

open access: yesLupus Science and Medicine, 2019
Gastric bypass surgery, also called Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), can result in the malabsorption of medications, requiring the use of higher than usual doses in order to achieve a therapeutic effect. We describe the results of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ)

Structural dynamics of the plant hormone receptor ETR1 in a native‐like membrane environment

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The present study unveils the structural and signaling dynamics of ETR1, a key plant ethylene receptor. Using an optimized nanodisc system and solution NMR, we captured full‐length ETR1 in a native‐like membrane environment. Our findings reveal dynamic domain uncoupling and Cu(I)‐induced rigidification, providing the first evidence of metal‐triggered ...

Mechanistic basis for inhibition of the extended‐spectrum β‐lactamase GES‐1 by enmetazobactam and tazobactam

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is of huge importance, resulting in over 1 million deaths each year. Here, we describe how a new drug, enmetazobactam, designed to help fight resistant bacterial diseases, inhibits a key enzyme (GES‐1) responsible for AMR. Our data show it is a more potent inhibitor than the related tazobactam, with high‐level computation

Aesthetic results in twin case undergoing transverse abdominoplasty versus Fleur-de-Lis abdominoplasty after massive weight loss

open access: yesJPRAS Open
This identical twin case demonstrates the aesthetic differences of two different body contouring procedures in alike patients. Body contouring improves physical, psychosocial, and sexual function therefore providing the best possible aesthetic outcome ...

Imeglimin attenuates liver fibrosis by inhibiting vesicular ATP release from hepatic stellate cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Imeglimin, at clinically relevant concentrations, inhibits vesicular ATP accumulation and release from hepatic stellate cells, thereby attenuating purinergic signaling and reducing fibrogenic activation. This mechanism reveals a newly identified antifibrotic action of imeglimin beyond glycemic control.

Biophysical analysis of angiotensin II and amyloid‐β cross‐interaction in aggregation and membrane disruption

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Angiotensin II (AngII), a neuropeptide, interacts with amyloid‐β (Aβ), a key player in Alzheimer's disease. This study reveals that AngII reduces Aβ aggregation and membrane disruption in vitro. Biophysical assays and molecular modeling suggest AngII binds disordered Aβ forms, potentially modulating early amyloidogenic events and contributing to ...

A low serum iron level is a potential predictor of poor renal function in patients following laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy: a retrospective study

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
This study aimed to assess the association of serum iron level (Iron) with the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) after bariatric surgery (BS).
