Influence of an Argon/Silane Atmosphere on the Temperature of a Thermal Plasma

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The influence of a silane‐doped argon atmosphere on the chemical composition and temperature of a thermal nontransferring argon plasma is investigated using optical emission spectroscopy. As a result of the high amount of free electrons resulting from the stepwise ionization and dissociation of the silane molecule, even a silane addition of 0.01 vol ...

Characterisation of the cold metal transfer (CMT) process and its application for low dilution cladding [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The process characteristics of the synergic cold metal transfer (CMT) process have been examined for welding aluminium alloy. Utilising a simple backlighting system and through the arc monitoring the droplet transfer modes were identified.

Oxide‐Free Titanium Coatings by Wire Arc Spraying in a Silane‐Doped Inert Atmosphere

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A silane‐doped argon atmosphere enables the production of oxide‐free titanium coatings via twin‐wire arc spraying at ambient pressure. This innovative approach eliminates residual oxygen, creating process conditions that prevent oxidation and nitride formation.

The Characteristics of Laser Welding of a Thin Aluminum Tab and Steel Battery Case for Lithium-Ion Battery

open access: yesMetals, 2020
During lithium-ion battery packing, joining between battery cases and tabs is challenging for manufacturers due to dissimilar materials of the battery case and the tab, as well as their thicknesses.

Weld Pool Dynamics and the Formation of Ripples in 3D Gas Metal Arc Welding [PDF]

open access: yesVolume 8: Heat Transfer, Fluid Flows, and Thermal Systems, Parts A and B, 2007
This article studies the transient weld pool dynamics under the periodical impingement of filler droplets that carry mass, momentum, thermal energy, and species in a moving 3D gas metal arc welding. The complicated transport phenomena in the weld pool are caused by the combined effect of droplet impingement, gravity, electromagnetic force, plasma arc ...

Parametric finite-element studies on the effect of tool shape in friction stir welding [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The success of the Friction Stir Welding (FSW) process, and the weld quality produced, depends significantly on the design of the welding tool. In this paper the effect of variation in various tool geometry parameters on FSW process outcomes, during the ...

Thermodynamic Pathways of Nonequilibrium Solidification in Wire‐Arc Additive Manufacturing Fe‐Based Multicomponent Alloy Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Geometry‐driven thermal behavior in wire‐arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) influences microstructural evolution during nonequilibrium solidification of a chemically complex Fe–Cr–Nb–W–Mo–C nanocomposite system. By comparing different deposits configurations, distinct entropy–cooling rate correlations, segregation, and carbide evolution are revealed ...

Comparisons of microstructure and mechanical properties of MAG joints welded under 2G and 3G conditions

open access: yesMaterials Research Express
MAG welding of 07MnMoVR steel was performed at the 2G and 3G positions, and weld formation, microstructure, residual stress, and tensile properties were compared. In this study, welds without defects were obtained at the 2G and 3G positions.

Thermomechanical Fatigue and Creep–Fatigue Interaction of Inconel 718 Additively Manufactured by Laser Beam Powder Bed Fusion

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Thermomechanical fatigue tests of laser beam powder bed fusion (PBF‐LB) Inconel 718 show that the additively manufactured material reaches almost the lifetimes of conventionally‐rolled material under no‐dwell conditions. Introducing dwell times at the maximum temperature markedly reduces the lifetimes due to pronounced grain boundary sliding associated
