New Safe Mud Weight Window Representations to Prevent Wellbore Instability

IADC/SPE Asia Pacific Drilling Technology, 2000
Abstract Wellbore stability-related problems are one of the main sources of time and money losses in any drilling operation. This is the reason why, in the last years, many improvements have been made in this specific field of research. The improvements are based on a better knowledge of the mechanisms that originate rock failure. One of

Application of Catastrophic Theory to Predict Wellbore Instability in Drilling

Proceedings of International Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition in China, 2010
Abstract Wellbore collapsing and formation leak off in drilling are all resulted from wellbore instability. So, researches on wellbore instability mechanism and its critical conditions can provide theoretical foundation on which is based to prevent wellbore instability in drilling.

Chemical-Mechanical Modeling of Wellbore Instability in Shales

1998
Shales make up over 75% of drilled formations and cause over 90% of wellbore instability problems. The drilling of shale can result in a variety of problems ranging from washout to complete collapse of the hole. These problems are severe and for the industry have been estimated to be a conservative $ 500 million/year problem.

The Effect of Water Activity in Shale on Wellbore Instability

Advanced Materials Research, 2012
It is accepted that the water flux in/out of the shale during drilling is the key factor, which controls wellbore instability. This flow can be divided into two components:1) the hydraulic flow due to the difference between the wellbore and pore hydraulic pressure; 2) the osmotic flow due to the imbalance between activities of the shale and the ...

Managing Wellbore Instability in Geologically Complex Field of Indian Offshore

GOTECH
Abstract This paper addresses the challenges encountered during the drilling of horizontal and multilateral wells in the geologically complex Western offshore field of India. The Operator has been actively engaged in drilling such wells since the late 1980s.
