On the construction and properties of WENO schemes order five, seven, nine, eleven and thirteen. Part 1. Construction and stability [PDF]

open access: yesКомпьютерные исследования и моделирование, 2016
Currently, different nonlinear numerical schemes of the spatial approximation are used in numerical simulation of boundary value problems for hyperbolic systems of partial differential equations (e. g.

Hybrid WENO schemes for polydisperse sedimentation models

open access: yesInternational Journal of Computer Mathematics, 2015
Polydisperse sedimentation models can be described by a strongly coupled system of conservation laws for the concentration of each species of solids. Typical solutions for the sedimentation model considered for batch settling in a column include stationary kinematic shocks separating layers of sediment of different composition.

Dynamics of Downdrafts Around a Growing Convective Cloud: A Numerical Study

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 130, Issue 22, 28 November 2025.
Abstract We examine the dynamics of cloud‐edge downdrafts over the growth phase of isolated cumuli, combining Eulerian and Lagrangian analyses. As in previous studies, our results show that growing cumuli are surrounded by downdrafts linked to cloud‐scale quasi‐toroidal circulations at all times at middle and upper cloud levels consistent with the ...

ERF: Energy Research and Forecasting Model

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, Volume 17, Issue 11, November 2025.
Abstract High performance computing (HPC) architectures have undergone rapid development in recent years. As a result, established software suites face an ever increasing challenge to remain performant on and portable across modern systems. Many of the widely adopted atmospheric modeling codes cannot fully (or in some cases, at all) leverage the ...

Simple smoothness indicator WENO-Z scheme for hyperbolic conservation laws [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The advantage of WENO-JS5 scheme [ J. Comput. Phys. 1996] over the WENO-LOC scheme [J. Comput. Phys.1994] is that the WENO-LOC nonlinear weights do not achieve the desired order of convergence in smooth monotone regions and at critical points.

The Importance of Seasonality in Seagrass Properties for Coastal Hydro‐Morphodynamics—A Case Study in a Wadden Sea Basin

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Earth Surface, Volume 130, Issue 11, November 2025.
Abstract Seagrass meadows fulfill many essential ecological functions, of which an important one is to stabilize sediment. Therefore, they are perceived as a nature‐based addition or alternative to conventional rigid coastal protection. The impact of seagrass meadows depends on their morphology, such as canopy height, shoot density, and spatial extent.

A WENO-Based Upwind Rotated Lattice Boltzmann Flux Solver with Lower Numerical Dissipation for Simulating Compressible Flows with Contact Discontinuities and Strong Shock Waves

open access: yesApplied Sciences
This paper presents a WENO-based upwind rotated lattice Boltzmann flux solver (WENO-URLBFS) in the finite difference framework for simulating compressible flows with contact discontinuities and strong shock waves.

A Theory for the Spurious Pressure Waves in Compressible Large Eddy Simulations of Shallow Cumulus Clouds

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 20, 28 October 2025.
Abstract Large‐eddy simulation (LES) has been an indispensable modeling tool for the study of shallow cumulus (ShCu) clouds. However, a recent study uncovered omnipresent spurious pressure waves around simulated ShCu clouds by three compressible community LES models, suggesting a potentially common issue.

LMARSpy: A GPU‐Ready Nonhydrostatic Dynamical Core With a Sharpness‐Preserving Monotonicity Limiter and a Conservative Vertical Implicit Solver

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, Volume 17, Issue 10, October 2025.
Abstract Global numerical modeling is advancing into the era of kilometer‐scale, non‐hydrostatic simulations, while heterogeneous computing emerges as a pivotal trend in high‐performance computing (HPC). As a strong candidate for next‐generation global kilometer‐scale general circulation models, the A‐grid dynamical core based on the Low Mach number ...

A New Type of High-Order Mapped Unequal-Sized WENO Scheme for Nonlinear Degenerate Parabolic Equations

open access: yesComputation
In this paper, we propose the MUSWENO scheme, a novel mapped weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) method that employs unequal-sized stencils, for solving nonlinear degenerate parabolic equations.
