Glossopteris Discovered in West Antarctica

Science, 1965
Leaf impressions from the Polarstar Formation in the northern Ellsworth Mountains are the first Glossopteris and the oldest identifiable plant fossils reported from West Antarctica. Their occurrence in a thick, probably marine, geosynclinal sequence in close association with coals and probable glacial deposits ...

West Antarctica and Dry Valleys

2023
Abstract West Antarctica has warmed by c.2°C (3.6°F) over the past 100 years. Ice shelves at the terminations of the large Pine Island and Thwaites Glaciers are melting from beneath. Antarctica has lost about 5 Gt of ice since 1980, mostly from that process.

The Future of Thwaites Glacier, West Antarctica.

2023
We use numerical modelling to address several questions related to the future evolution of Thwaites Glacier over the next 50 years. The importance of Thwaites Ice Shelf for upstream grounded flow is investigated by quantifying the buttressing stresses along the grounding line. Removing the ice shelf changes the stress regime along the grounding line by

Ice Flow Direction Change in Interior West Antarctica

Science, 2004
Upstream of Byrd Station (West Antarctica), ice-penetrating radar data reveal a distinctive fold structure within the ice, in which isochronous layers are unusually deep. The fold has an axis more than 50 kilometers long, which is aligned up to 45° to the ice flow direction.

West Antarctica: Tectonics and Paleogeography

2012
West Antarctica is an ensemble of blocks that have moved independently of each other and of cratonic East Antarctica. The onset of Terra Australis orogenesis was responsible for the termination of passive margin sedimentation along the greater part of the Pacific margin of Gondwana and began a long-lived process of accretion that added much of the ...
