[Pathomorphology of West Nile fever].

8 patients, aged from 61 to 70 years, died from serous meningoencephalitis during the outburst of the West Nile fever in Volgograd in 1999-2001, were studied morphologically. Serous meningoencephalitis with necrotic vasculitis is a characteristic feature of this fever with degenerative changes and destructive foci in the brain.

[Patient with West Nile fever in the Netherlands].

A 45-year-old patient was admitted with high fever and inadequate behaviour. She had recently stayed in Israel. Extensive investigation suggested a viral infection, but the cause was not established. Her partner suggested the possibility of West Nile virus infection, based upon information he had found on the Internet.

West Nile fever and its development

Arthropod-borne viruses are the cause of numerous emerging zoonotic diseases worldwide and cause more than one million deaths per year. West Nile fever virus is one of them. Since its discovery in 1937, it has spread along the world, till becoming one of the most important etiological agents producing encephalitis in horses and birds.
