Hourglass Automata [PDF]

open access: yesEPTCS 161, 2014, pp. 175-188, 2014
In this paper, we define the class of hourglass automata, which are timed automata with bounded clocks that can be made to progress backwards as well as forwards at a constant rate. We then introduce a new clock update for timed automata that allows hourglass automata to be expressed.

Microplastic pollution in the surface waters of creeks along the Kenyan coast, Western Indian Ocean (WIO)

open access: yesWestern Indian Ocean Journal of Marine Science, 2021
Microplastic pollution has been recognized as a global threat in marine environments and a danger to prey, predators and humans. Yet there have been limited studies in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) and along the Kenyan coast making it difficult to ...

Understanding Toxicity Triggers on Reddit in the Context of Singapore [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2022
While the contagious nature of online toxicity sparked increasing interest in its early detection and prevention, most of the literature focuses on the Western world. In this work, we demonstrate that 1) it is possible to detect toxicity triggers in an Asian online community, and 2) toxicity triggers can be strikingly different between Western and ...

Tidal Tails of Minor Mergers II: Comparing Star Formation in the Tidal Tails of NGC 2782 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The peculiar spiral NGC 2782 is the result of a minor merger with a mass ratio ~4:1 occurring ~200 Myr ago. This merger produced a molecular and HI rich, optically bright Eastern tail and an HI-rich, optically faint Western tail. Non-detection of CO in the Western Tail by Braine et al. (2001) suggested that star formation had not yet begun.

The ongoing value of first few X studies for COVID-19 in the Western Pacific Region

open access: yesWestern Pacific surveillance and response journal : WPSAR, 2022

Western Mathematics in China from the 16th to the 20th Century [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2016

Later, in the 19the century, even though Li Shanlan had invented his own system of algebraic notations, however Western ones were enventually adopted.

Chaos in the segments from Korean traditional singing and western singing [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
We investigate the time series of the segments from a Korean traditional song ``Gwansanyungma'' and a western song ``La Mamma Morta'' using chaotic analysis techniques. It is found that the phase portrait in the reconstructed state space of the time series of the segment from the Korean traditional song has a more complex structure in comparison with

AI Suggestions Homogenize Writing Toward Western Styles and Diminish Cultural Nuances [PDF]

open access: yes
Large language models (LLMs) are being increasingly integrated into everyday products and services, such as coding tools and writing assistants. As these embedded AI applications are deployed globally, there is a growing concern that the AI models underlying these applications prioritize Western values.

Spotting Information biases in Chinese and Western Media [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2017
Newswire and Social Media are the major sources of information in our time. While the topical demographic of Western Media was subjects of studies in the past, less is known about Chinese Media. In this paper, we apply event detection and tracking technology to examine the information overlap and differences between Chinese and Western - Traditional ...

Spectral properties of nonthermal X-ray emission from the shell-type SNR RX J1713.7-3946 as revealed by XMM-Newton [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
We present the results of our morphological and spectral study of properties of the supernova remnant RX J1713.7-3946 based on data obtained with XMM-Newton. Highly inhomogeneous structures, such as the bright spots, filaments and dark voids, noted by Uchiyama et al. (2003), appear in the entire bright western portion of the shell.
