A retrospective on the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season

open access: yesWeather, EarlyView.
The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season was intermittent, with extended quiet periods separated by three clusters of activity. The broad‐scale conditions were often unfavourable for cyclogenesis and common drivers of activity such as La Niña were weak, but well above‐average sea temperatures still supported intense storms.

Possible relation of the western North Pacific monsoon to the tropical cyclone activity over western North Pacific

International Journal of Climatology, 2015
ABSTRACTThis study examined the relationship between the western North Pacific monsoon (WNPM) and the tropical cyclone (TC) activity over western North Pacific during the summer (June to August) in a period from 1977 to 2013. According to the western North Pacific monsoon index (WNPMI), 10 years with high indices (referred to as the positive WNPMI ...

Influence of the North Pacific Victoria mode on western North Pacific tropical cyclone genesis

Climate Dynamics, 2018
The Victoria mode (VM) is defined as the second empirical orthogonal function mode (EOF2) of sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) in the North Pacific north of 20°N. This study examines the influence of the spring VM on the tropical cyclone (TC) genesis over the western North Pacific (WNP) during summer (May–August) for the period 1960–2016.

Geological History of the Western North Pacific

Science, 1970
A considerable portion of the abyssal floor of the western North Pacific was already receiving pelagic sediment in late Jurassic time. Carbonate sediments were later replaced by abyssal clays as the basin deepened and bottom waters became more aggressive.

Methane in the western North Pacific

Journal of Oceanography, 1995
The concentration of methane in about 400 seawater samples collected in the western North Pacific, mostly from 40°N to 5°S along 165°E was determined. While the concentration of methane in the surface water was slightly greater in the high-latitudes, it did not widely vary with a standard deviation of 0.29 n mol/l for a mean value of 2.49 n mol/l.

Chlorofluorocarbons in the western North Pacific in 1993 and formation of North Pacific intermediate water

Journal of Oceanography, 1996
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC-11 and CFC-12) in the intermediate water having σθ between 26.4 and 27.2 were determined at 75 stations in the western North Pacific north of 20°N and west of 175.5°E in 1993. The intermediate water of 26.4–26.6σθ was almost saturated with respect to the present atmospheric CFC-11 in the zone between 35 and 45°N around the ...
