On the velocity-strengthening behavior of dry friction
The onset of frictional instabilities, e.g. earthquakes nucleation, is intimately related to velocity-weakening friction, in which the frictional resistance of interfaces decreases with increasing slip velocity.

Earthquakes: from chemical alteration to mechanical rupture
In the standard rebound theory of earthquakes, elastic deformation energy is progressively stored in the crust until a threshold is reached at which it is suddenly released in an earthquake.

The conversion of lignocellulosics to fermentable sugars: A survey of current research and application to CELSS [PDF]
An overview of the options for converting lignocellulosics into fermentable sugars as applied to the Closed Ecological Life Support System (CELSS) is given. A requirement for pretreatment is shown as well as the many available options.

Chemical reactions of metal powders with organic and inorganic liquids during ball milling [PDF]
Chromium and/or nickel powders were milled in metal chlorides and in organic liquids representative of various functional groups. The powders always reacted with the liquid and became contaminated with elements from them.

Effect of milling and leaching on the structure of sintered silicon [PDF]
Sintering was performed in He for 16 hours at 1200, 1250, and 1300 C. Compacts of as-received Si did not densify during sintering. Milling reduced the average particle size to below 0.5 micrometer and enhanced densification (1.75 g/cc).
