Alteration of wettability and wettability heterogeneity

Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering, 2002
Abstract This paper emphasizes how wettability may be altered for special core analysis purposes and by which processes this occurs. Studies of how the imbibition characteristics change after aging core plugs in crude oil are reported, focusing on imbibition rate and endpoint saturations and on the induction time.

A review of wettability alteration using surfactants in carbonate reservoirs

Advances in Colloid and Interface Science, 2021
The wettability of carbonate rocks is often oil-wet or mixed wet. A large fraction of oil is still remained in carbonate reservoirs, it is therefore of particular significance to implement effective methods to improve oil recovery from carbonate reservoirs.

Wettability alteration in carbonates

Colloids and Surfaces A: Physicochemical and Engineering Aspects, 2003
Abstract The chemical interaction between cationic surfactants of the type R-N(CH3)3Br, termed CnTAB, and carboxylates is the key factor in changing the wettability from oil-wet chalk to more water-wet conditions. Oil can then be displaced from the chalk by spontaneous imbibition of water.

Wettability Alteration of Calcite by Nonionic Surfactants

Langmuir, 2018
The process of selecting an effective surfactant for wettability alteration is dependent on a number of factors, including mineral type, temperature, salinity, and nature of adsorbed oil and ultimately how the molecular structure of the surfactant interacts with all of these.

Nanofluids Alter the Surface Wettability of Solids

Langmuir, 2015
We report the results of our studies on the changes in the contact angle and interfacial tension using a nanofluid composed of silica nanoparticles dispersed in water on three different solid substrates: gold (partially hydrophobic), glass (hydrophilic), and a silicon wafer (hydrophilic).

A Review on Wettability Alteration in Carbonate Rocks: Wettability Modifiers

Energy & Fuels, 2019
More than half of the global oil reserves are in carbonate reservoirs. Carbonate rocks, however, in most cases tend to be mixed-wet or oil-wet.

Dynamic Laboratory Wettability Alteration

Energy & Fuels, 2010
We present experimental wettability alteration results in originally strongly water-wet, outcrop chalk core plugs using a static and two dynamic aging methods. Dynamic aging with continuous crude oil injection during the entire aging process exhibited greater reduction in water-wetness of the strongly water-wet chalk plugs than static aging without ...

Proppant Upgrade by Wettability Alteration

International Petroleum Technology Conference, 2016
Abstract Proppant plays a key role in maintaining fracture conductivity during well production. Silica sand is by far the most commonly used proppant due to its low cost and availability. However, some of frac sands, especially Tier 2 sand, are not always satisfactory under formation conditions.
