Steam flow excited vibration and dynamic characteristics of seal in different rotor whirling motion

Tribology International, 2021
Abstract A multi-frequency conical whirl model was established to investigate the influence of different rotor whirling motion on seal steam flow excited vibration and dynamic characteristics. The simulation method of rotor motion was improved to adapt the ultra-supercritical steam turbine, in which the whirling motion and rotational motion were ...

Multifunctional Noncontact Micromanipulation Using Whirling Flow Generated by Vibrating a Single Piezo Actuator

Small, 2018
AbstractA noncontact method that can achieve immobilization, transportation, and rotation in the microscale is desired in biological micromanipulation. A multifunctional noncontact micromanipulation method is proposed here based on a vibration‐generated whirling flow. Resonance of a cantilever structure is utilized to extend the straight vibration of a

Experimental Investigations of Rotor Whirl Excitation Forces Induced by Labyrinth Seal Flow

Journal of Vibration and Acoustics, 1990
The labyrinth seal flow-induced forces have been identified as one of the causes of rotordynamic instabilities in the recent literature. The eccentricity of the rotor center relative to the seal center introduces asymmetry in the seal clearance flow causing circumferential variation of the pressure in seal cavities.

Conical whirl instability of turbulent flow hybrid porous journal bearings

Tribology International, 1998
An analysis of conical whirl instability of an unloaded rigid rotor supported in a turbulent flow hybrid porous journal bearing has been presented, following Constantinescu's turbulent lubrication theory. The effect of bearing feeding parameter (β), Reynolds number (Re), ratio of wall thickness to journal radius (H/R) and anisotropy of porous material ...

Perturbed Flow Structure in an Annular Seal Due to Synchronous Whirl

Journal of Fluids Engineering, 1994
This paper provides a thorough examination of the flow field resulting from synchronous whirl of an eccentric rotor in an annular seal under typical operating conditions. A new finite-element-based perturbation model is employed in the analysis, whereby perturbations in the flow thermophysical properties are attributed to virtual distortions in the ...

Simulation and research on flow of whirl cavity in a vortex pump

2010 International Conference On Computer Design and Applications, 2010
In case of the vortex pump, the paper simulated numerical value of three dimensional flow field under turbulence incompressible condition, applying Pro/E to sculpt the model, adopting SIMPLEC algorithm, RNG k-ɛ turbulence model and partitioning non-structure hex grid in the area of flow passage in the pump.

Flow Visualization Study of Stationary Fire Whirls just Downwind of Meter-Scale Turbulent Flames

Flow, Turbulence and Combustion, 2018
Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine whether stationary fire whirls just downwind of a meter-scale turbulent flame are the lowest part of the counter-rotating vortex pair (CVP) of the plume from the flame. Plumes from a turbulent pool fire and air flow around the fire were visualized.

On-Chip Three-dimension Cell Rotation Using Whirling Flows Generated by Oscillating Asymmetrical Microstructures

2019 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS), 2019
The capability to precisely rotate the cells and other microscale objects is invaluable in biomedicine, bioengineering, and biophysics. We propose a novel on-chip three-dimension (3D) cell rotation method using whirling flows generated by oscillating asymmetrical microstructures.

Fluid-Elastic Whirling of Infinite Tube Rows and Arrays in Cross-Flow

1987
The quasi-steady displacement dependent model due to Connors and Blevins, for the fluidelastic whirling instability of an infinite tube row is briefly reviewed and extended to yield the frequency of the whirling vibrations together with the corresponding mode shapes.

Rotor Whirl Forces Induced by the Tip Clearance Effect in Axial Flow Compressors

Journal of Vibration and Acoustics, 1993
It is now widely recognized that destabilizing forces, tending to generate forward rotor whirl, are generated in axial flow turbines as a result of the nonuniform torque induced by the nonuniform tip-clearance in a deflected rotor—the so called Thomas/Alford force (Thomas, 1958, and Alford, 1965).
