Development of a Disease Activity Index for the Assessment of VEXAS Syndrome (VEXAS‐DAI)

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective Vacuoles, E1 enzyme, X‐linked, autoinflammatory, somatic syndrome (VEXAS) syndrome is characterized by a complex spectrum of inflammatory and hematologic manifestations. Clinical research to identify effective therapies is urgently needed but is hindered by the lack of validated outcome measures.

Box-and-whisker-plot comparing the distribution of sex proportions from 100 synthetic populations to the actual proportions observed in SRTR data (represented by a red dot) covering the period February 19, 2015 and September 1, 2021.

open access: yes
Each box horizontally spans the interquartile range (IQR), while the vertical line inside each box represents the median. The extremes of each whisker mark the observation that is farthest to the left or right of the median while still falling within 1.5

New AI‐Assisted Approach for Expanding the Solution Space: Application to Lattice Structure Design

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work introduces an innovative framework for designing structured materials by ex panding the design space through reparameterization of qualitative variables into continuous structural descriptors. Combined with machine‐learning‐based prediction and multi‐objective optimization, the approach enables the discovery of novel lattice architectures ...

Whisker Meditations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
When I told my fiance' s mother about my persistent, recurring whisker-lower right, underside of my chin-she smiled sideways, said, "Be glad it's only one."Originally published as “Whisker Meditations.” Georgetown Review 13.1 Spring/ 2012: 98-100. Posted

Monolithic Oxidation Enables Ultrathin Vertically Graded Tantalum Oxide for Low‐Voltage, Low‐Variability Memristive Switching

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Monolithic UV‐ozone oxidation of Ta forms an ultrathin Ta2O5/TaOx bilayer enabling resistive switching with a vertical defect gradient. A stoichiometric surface layer over an oxygen‐deficient sublayer promotes localized filament nucleation near the top interface, enabling low‐voltage operation, and reduced cycle‐to‐cycle variability.

Strong Lead‐Free Bioinspired Piezoceramics for Durable Energy Transducers

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We fabricated brick‐and‐mortar lead‐free piezoceramics with Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 monocrystal platelets as bricks and amorphous silica as mortar. The alignment of the bricks and the presence of the amorphous silica led to anisotropic residual stresses. These residual stresses increase the samples toughness, strength and durability while the brick alignment ...

3D Bioprinted Glioblastoma Multiforme Models: How the Extracellular Matrix Glycosignature Influences Drug Response

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Aberrant glycosylation in the glioblastoma tumor microenvironment drives therapeutic resistance. Here, a 3D bioprinted model was engineered by incorporating α‐NeuNAc‐(2→3)‐β‐D‐Gal‐ and chondroitin sulfate. Combined multiplex immunofluorescence and synchrotron‐based nanoCT analysis revealed that glycan‐matrix interactions dictate specific drug‐escape ...

On the growth behavior of multiple whiskers generated on Sn/Cu plating −Predicting the growth behavior of the longest whiskers using whisker length distributions

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology
Although several studies have examined whisker growth on Sn/Cu plating, research on whisker growth laws remain limited, particularly regarding the collective growth characteristics of multiple whiskers on plated surfaces. In this study, tin-plated copper
