Spontaneous whisker growth of silver amalgam is observed on a mercury surface from aqueous solutions of silver nitrate and mercurous nitrate. The growth parameters are determined and the growth rate of the crystal whiskers is measured. In the temperature range from 3 to 45 °C the growth rate of the whiskers is constant at a given temperature.
