The Thermopower in Bismuth Whiskers [PDF]
The temperature dependence of the thermopower in Bi whiskers of different thickness (0.3 to 6 μm) is measured within the temperature range 77 to 300 K. At low temperatures the thermopower in the thinnest whiskers changes its sign and becomes positive.

Whisker motor cortex ablation and whisker movement patterns
Somatosensory & Motor Research, 2003Previous studies, based on qualitative observations, reported that lesions of the whisker motor cortex produce no deficits in whisking behavior. We used high-resolution optoelectronic recording methods to compare the temporal organization and kinematics of whisker movements before and after unilateral lesions of whisker motor cortex in rats.

Every student learns that the sensory cortex is used for processing sensation and the motor cortex is used for perceiving movement. However, in the real world, this may not always be so neatly arranged. Matyas et al. (p. [1240][1]) have found that sensory and motor fields are specialized for different types of movement, such that in mice the motor ...

Chitin is the second most abundant semicrystalline polysaccharide. Like cellulose, the amorphous domains of chitin can also be removed under certain conditions such as acidolysis to give rise to crystallites in nanoscale, which are the so-called chitin nanocrystals or chitin whiskers (CHWs).

Object localization with whiskers
Biological Cybernetics, 2008Rats use their large facial hairs (whiskers) to detect, localize and identify objects in their proximal three-dimensional (3D) space. Here, we focus on recent evidence of how object location is encoded in the neural sensory pathways of the rat whisker system.

Spontaneous whisker growth of silver amalgam is observed on a mercury surface from aqueous solutions of silver nitrate and mercurous nitrate. The growth parameters are determined and the growth rate of the crystal whiskers is measured. In the temperature range from 3 to 45 °C the growth rate of the whiskers is constant at a given temperature.

Whisker trimming is extremely common in strain A2G mice, with an incidence which progresses with age. Over 75% of cages containing 2-3 mice have 1 or more active trimmers by the time the mice are about 60 days old. When male A2G mice were housed with mice of other strains there was a tendency for trimming to occur most in cages where the A2G male was ...
