Effects of boundary roughness on a Q-factor of whispering-gallery-mode lasing microdisk cavities
We perform numerical studies of the effect of sidewall imperfections on the resonant state broadening of the optical microdisk cavities for lasing applications.

Nuclear Rayleigh and whispering gallery waves excited in heavy ion collisions
Abstract The gross structure oscillations recently observed in heavy-ion elastic or inelastic scattering and fusion cross sections are here analyzed in terms of nuclear surface (creep) wave resonances. Their dispersion curves characterize these waves as being of Rayleigh or of Whispering-Gallery type.

Observation of whispering gallery modes in the mid-infrared with a quantum cascade laser: possible applications to nanoliter chemical sensing [PDF]
Excitation of the whispering gallery modes (WGM) of a CaF_2 ball resonator is demonstrated at 4.5 micron with a pulsed Quantum Cascade laser. A prism coupling scheme for mid-infrared is described.

Complete linear optical isolation at the microscale with ultralow loss
Low-loss optical isolators and circulators are critical nonreciprocal components for signal routing and protection, but their chip-scale integration is not yet practical using standard photonics foundry processes. The significant challenges that confront
