Whispering-gallery mode resonators for millimeter wave radiospectroscopy [PDF]

open access: possible11th International Conference 'Microwave and Telecommunication Technology'. Conference Proceedings (IEEE Cat. No.01EX487), 2002
The results of a study of the spectral, energy and field characteristics of dielectric resonators having whispering gallery modes in the millimeter range of electromagnetic waves are given. The dielectric resonators such as disks, rings and balls were made on the basis of dielectric materials with low losses (quartz, glass-ceramic, sapphire).

Whispering-gallery waves

Quantum Electronics, 2002
A review of the theory of the natural waves (eigen-modes) in a dielectric sphere is presented. A special attention is paid to the eigenmodes with large radial and azimuthal indices, the so-called whispering-gallery modes. The experimental results of the spectroscopic study of modes in a dielectric sphere are reported.

Self-confinement of light whispering gallery waves [PDF]

open access: possible5th International Workshop on Laser and Fiber-Optical Networks Modeling, 2003. Proceedings of LFNM 2003., 2004
Summary form only given. Among the numerous specific properties of whispering gallery (WG) waves the most important one for the problem considered is that the WG group velocity can be much less than the velocity of light. As a result, the energy density in the WG wave and, consequently, the electric field strength which determines the increase in the ...

Peculiarities of the excitation of whispering gallery waves in the hemispherical dielectric resonator [PDF]

open access: possibleThe Fifth International Kharkov Symposium on Physics and Engineering of Microwaves, Millimeter, and Submillimeter Waves (IEEE Cat. No.04EX828), 2004
The carried out investigations of the whispering gallery mode fields in a hemisphere by a local radiant arranged on a mirror and, not having central symmetry, have shown an opportunity of preferred excitation of waves of one type E or H. It allows a little to rarefy a spectrum of excited oscillations, having restricted one of the modes, and more ...

Acoustic Waves Tunnelling into Whispering Gallery Waves [PDF]

open access: possible, 2003
Generation and propagation of acoustic interface waves running along curvilinear weakly contrast boundary of two media are stadied by formal highfrequency asymptotic technique. Two types of interface waves are found. Waves of one type resemble creeping waves, on the convex side of the boundary and have ray representation on the concave side.

Excitation localization principle for whispering-gallery wave microcavities

Technical Digest. Summaries of Papers Presented at the International Quantum Electronics Conference. Conference Edition. 1998 Technical Digest Series, Vol.7 (IEEE Cat. No.98CH36236), 2002
Theory predicts that a tightly focused Gaussian light beam passing outside but near a spherical or cylindrical microcavity will preferentially excite specific cavity resonances depending on its distance to the cavity center. This has been called the localization principle.

Whispering gallery waves in a neighborhood of a flat point of a concave boundary

Journal of Soviet Mathematics, 1983
The propagation of whispering gallery waves near a concave (from the side of the wave field) boundary having a flat point is studied. As in [4], the problem that arises for an equation of Schrodinger type is solved by the method of grids. The results of the computations are presented as shadow figures.

The creeping and whispering gallery waves on the surface of a transparent body

Journal of Electromagnetic Waves and Applications, 1995
The waves propagating on the surface of an arbitrary convex transparent body are studied by the boundary layer method. When the refraction index of the body is high enough. both creeping and whispering gallery type of wave can propagate. The propagation constant are shown to be the same as for an equivalent body described by an impedance boundary ...
