New white dwarf and subdwarf stars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 12 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
White dwarfs carry information on the structure and evolution of the Galaxy, especially through their luminosity function and initial-to-final mass relation. Very cool white dwarfs provide insight into the early ages of each population.

Nonlinear Optical Microscopy of Semiconductor–Metal Nanocavities

open access: yesAdvanced Photonics Research, EarlyView.
Three‐dimensional nonlinear optical microscopy is used to visualize GaAs–gold hybrid nanocavities. By carefully selecting the pump wavelength to position the harmonic generation at the nanopillar resonance, an enhanced contrast is observed in the nonlinear imaging.

Diffusion in helium white dwarf stars [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2000
This paper is aimed at exploring the effects of diffusion on the structure and evolution of low-mass helium white dwarfs. To this end, we solve the multicomponent flow equations describing gravitational settling and chemical and thermal diffusion. The diffusion calculations are coupled to an evolutionary code in order to follow the cooling of low-mass,

The Physical Nature of Subdwarf A Stars: White Dwarf Impostors [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
We address the physical nature of subdwarf A-type (sdA) stars and their possible link to extremely low mass (ELM) white dwarfs (WDs). The two classes of objects are confused in low-resolution spectroscopy. However, colors and proper motions indicate that

Transformation of a Silicate Material for Carbon Negative Magnesia‐Based Cement via Electrochemistry

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The transformation of a magnesium trisilicate material via water electrolysis into precursor phases necessary for magnesium‐based M‐S‐H cement is explored. The dissolution of the material mediated electrochemically is monitored, and the analysis of the resulting phases indicate their suitability as effective precursors for M‐S‐H cement.

Stellar Archeology: What White Dwarf Stars Tell Us About the History of the Galaxy [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Astronomy and Space Sciences, 2012
White dwarf stars have played important roles in rather diverse areas of astrophysics. This paper outlines how these stellar remnants, especially those in widely separated “fragile” binaries, have provided unique leverage on difficult astrophysical ...

Magnetic White Dwarf Stars [PDF]

open access: yesPublications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 1996
Three aspects of magnetic white dwarf stars are studied to aid in the understanding of stellar evolution. A survey of ~ 50 DC white dwarf stars was conducted in circular spectropolarimetry to search for magnetic fields >~ 30 kG. Four DC stars were discovered with magnetic fields above 30 kG: G 111-49 with Be ~ -220 MG, G 183-35 with Be= +6.8 ± 0.5 MG ...

RING‐Between‐RING‐Type E3 Ligase Ariadne‐Like Protein 8 Negatively Regulates Plant Virus Infection by Targeting a Viral Movement Protein

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The plant RING‐between‐RING (RBR)‐type E3 ligase, Ariadne‐like protein 8 (ARI8), ubiquitinates and degrades a viral movement protein, restricting virus spread. ARI8 also inhibits other triple gene block 1 (TGB1)‐containing viruses, revealing a broad‐spectrum antiviral role.

Comparing the asteroseismic properties of pulsating extremely low-mass pre-white dwarf stars and δ Scuti stars

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2017
We present the first results of a detailed comparison between the pulsation properties of pulsating Extremely Low-Mass pre-white dwarf stars (the pre-ELMV variable stars) and δ Scuti stars.
