This book contains the contributed papers and reviews from IAU Colloquium Number 114 on White Dwarfs held at Dartmouth College in August 1988. All the current fields of research in this area are covered including the evolution of white dwarfs, links to progenitors, luminosity functions of white dwarfs, evolution of white dwarfs in binaries ...

White dwarfs have been known for slightly more than fifty years; with their planet-like diameters, and stellar-like masses their densities are enormously much higher than those of ‘normal’ stars. They thus appear to represent a state of matter totally unknown and possibly unattainable on earth.

As 98% of all stars evolve into white dwarf starsm their study tell us about the evolution of the majority of stars. White dwarf stars show luminosity variations when their temperature reach instabilitity strips caused by high surface opacity. These variations are due to global pulsations that can be used to study the internal structure and evolution ...

IN a recent paper, Blackett1 has suggested that the Zeeman effect might be responsible for the peculiar absence of metallic lines in the spectra of most of the white dwarfs and may also contribute to the broadening of the hydrogen lines. Since this suggestion was given as one more argument in support of the theory of the magnetic field of massive ...

UBVR Photometry of white dwarfs and white dwarfs suspects
Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 1972Photoelectric UBVr photometry is presented for 33 white-dwarf suspects from the Lowell Observatory lists. On the basis of (B- V) and (U- B) color indices, eight probable white dwarfs are identffied.
